Anyone ever recorded in the studio? Got some voulchers..
Basically i want to do a cover of wonderwall, the Ryan admas version, what would i need? would i need to give the studio an instrumental?
Also i know it sounds daft, but im certain that i can only sing properly when i have the headphones in actually listening to the song and singing with it, i dont want to look like an idiot lol.

If so, and I don't mean to be rude, forget it.
It would be far far FAR FAR cheaper to by yourself a little Karaoke machine with a record function on it. Seriously.
HOWEVER, you are probably better off using a microphone on a mac. I know a few artists actually do that if they're on a tour bus at the time of recording, and although much of it is re-recorded in a proper studio and/or sent to mastering, it still happens and audio technology is very good on computers for recording.
What are you dong for the instrumental backing track?
This is what the process will be if you have an instrumental version of the song you want to sing along to on CD.
You take your CD into the studio the producer will rip the audio to his DAW, record your vocal then mix the both together.
Should take an hour with a few vocal takes.
What recording studio is it you have vouchers for?
just a small one in kent. So why do they wear headphones? Just to hear the instrumental? likle i said im convinced i can only sing when listening to the whole thing and singing along to it lol
If you have no music to provide then you are stumped.
If the studio are giving away vouchers I would assume they would have a load of Karaoke tracks to sing along to.
Singers generally know the tune...
The same way you know how to sing along to Wonderwall.
Sometimes when recording you can have the sheet music infront of you. They often do that with choirs for example.
But you could know the melody you're singing off by heart, especially since it's a cover. The instrumental will help you keep in tune and in time.
Yes, they usually only hear the instrumental in headphones. And often it's a more toned-down instrumental than the final version with the added production. With rappers, they sometimes even just have the percussion and a metronome playing when recording, and they add the synths in afterwards.
When it's new songs written for another vocalist to sing (as is the case with most pop stars for example), usually one of the people that wrote the song will do a demo version so the singer that's going to release the final version of the song will have a rough idea of how the writers imagine melody to sound like.
As for the recording. Assuming you've got a backing track, you need to be prepared...
1. make sure it's in the right key for you
2. Practice. Spend time making sure you know every beat and where to breathe
3. When you're there, be polite, say please and thank you....You'd be surprised how many people treat engineers as though they're just some monkey. They have the power to make you sound great..........or crap.
4. Check with the engineer what they want to do if you make a mistake, some will want you to start again, and some will want you to carry on and then just correct the mistakes after you've finished.
