No. 1 reason to use a computer?

What is the number 1 reason people use a computer for or the primary reason they would buy one?

I know people will use them for all sorts but speaking generally, I'm curious.

Mine would be to get on the web, but it wasn't always number 1 for me. My first PC I purchased to play Spear of Destiny and Wolfenstein 3D.

Do you think it's e-mail?

Some things in life you can't put a price on.

Number 1 reason - the Internet. More specifically:

Accessing information. We can now access an unprecedented, unlimited wealth of knowledge (and porn) in seconds.

Communication. We can now argue for hours with random, worldwide strangers over trivial things.

More fun to argue with friends, sat in a pub, with some pig snacks.

Internet has taken all the fun out of that, as someone will whip there phone out as 'proof' they are right.

You can't call you're mate a knob and run away. Since they know where you live.

Oh, that is a hard one to be honest.

My first computer i had before the internet was around, it was a ZX81. Why did i buy it?

I was at college at the time and a mate of mine came in with a this little black box which he said was a computer. don't silly I said, computers are big things and they need a lot of space.

He unpacked it, put it on the table and connected it to the Tv in the break room, connected a cassette player and loaded in some game or other, I can't remember what. I was amazed. then he showed me the code and i was hooked. Shame that I never did do much with coding.

so why did I buy one? i still don't really know, just interested i suppose. then I went to the Speccy, CMM 64, Amiga and PC.

If i was just getting into computers now, I suppose it would be the internet that would get me to buy one.

Mind you if I knew all these years ago how much this hobby would have cost me over the years I would never have bothered.

That may be nearer the truth than you think for a lot of folk.

My main PC is a media sever for the home network, used a lot for that. I'm getting back into video editing now the grand children are here, I want to leave them more than the twenty or thirty tapes I have of my children as they grew up. I also use it tied into ham radio, CCTV security and the usual emails, spreadsheets and general internet stuff. When I'm back home I'll be setting up a few trail camera's looking at local Badger, Otter and Muntjac deer which I'm very fortunate to have living close by.

Backgammon online and thats about it for me really.

Porn is by far the most important, useful & sensible reason for any computer setup. Any other tasks are just useless, stupid & totally unecessary.

The main reason to get a computer/laptop would be for surfing the Internet probably. It's a bit of a waste getting a computer/laptop without being connected to the Internet.

    Maybe for some people.

my computer is now used for video editing , something I would not have got into if i did not have a computer.

I also pay bills, send my meter readings, chat to people in other countries for nothing. Play the odd game.

Oh yes, shopping, not groceries, but other stuff,

What is the number 1 reason people use a computer for or the primary reason they would buy one?

It really does depend on what day it is (and also what time of the day!).

For me a computer is exactly the same as a spanner, screwdriver or any other tool that I may use except it's much more of a multi-tool than any Swiss knife or a posh set of pliers ever will be.

Today I used my computer to first read the news (I don't need to buy newspapers any more) then to read module texts for one of my degree courses which are only supplied electronically. I then used an IDE to create a SOAP web service written in Java which I tested with a local web server and then deployed onto one of the University's servers and created UDDI entries for it and then wrote up how and why I did that using a word processor. The document I created was saved both locally and into 'the cloud' so it would be synchronised with all of the computers I use. Then I had lunch!

I agree with your main use as being the internet, but there are so many ways to use that connection to the 'outside world' that it is pretty much inevitable that every thing I use my computer for involves communication of some sort. I wouldn't be able to work without an internet connection!

Like one of the earlier posters I also had a ZX81 but I was a cheapskate and my one involved having to use a soldering iron for a few hours to make something that worked. I remember happy days spent sitting and reading the best manual that ever came with a computer and learning BASIC programming by doing it, games then came later.

So my main uses of a computer are learning, then finding out stuff and then probably more learning (then a bit of playing games ;))
