Can anyone recommend me a few tv shows from the US to start watching?

I have a bit of time and am looking at the Sopranos but then again there’s The Wire, Game of Thrones, Dexter, Deadwood & Homeland etc.

I am into the gangster type of shows and have caught up with Boardwalk Empire but am open minded.

Apart from the HomeLand / Revenge series; I recommend US version of House of Cards - I'm really enjoying it even though I thought the UK version would have spolied it for me. Its really good.
    Enjoy

Breaking Bad is a absolute must watch imo

Fairly easy to follow, very, very few filler episodes where nothing actually happens. Superb acting, some great characters and something totally new away from the normal cops or gangster programs that keep getting churned out

Based on your examples then without any doubt Southland, one of the best US cop dramas of all time, even the intro music gets the hairs on my neck going.

That's not a statement one hears too often (or ever, before now).:D

    Agree totally with this.

The West Wing is the best TV programme I've seen.

Friday Night Lights is very good.

Chuck in "Frasier" as comfortably the best US sitcom and you won't go far wrong.

I would agree about West Wing being one of the best shows ever but will hoy the caveat in that you need to be in to politics and have a understanding of the way things work to really enjoy it imo

If you like Law stuff then Suits isn't too bad.

Not a patch on Boston Legal though if you want to go a few years back. And then there's The Practice which was it's predecessor.

Not a full series but a mini series drama - Murder One. Going a long way back but it is very good.

I cannot understand how this wasn't picked up by a UK channel
    - it's just the best US series I have ever seen.
Can't wait for the final 8 episodes but it will be so sad to see it end

I am not especially into politics and, before watching this, had no more than a 'loose' understanding of how it works in the US.

This, by not talking down to the audience, teaches you.

    It is, essentially, about life.

Dexter and Homeland are brilliant, from what I've seen Breaking Bad is good but not as addictive as everyone says...

If you've never watched The Sopranos then that should definitely be top of your list.

    Then The Wire.

    Also:
    Mad Men
    Deadwood
    Breaking Bad
    Boardwalk Empire

    I am thoroughly enjoying / anticipating :

    Dexter
    Walking Dead
    Good Wife
    Scandal
    Person of Interest

and wondering whether Parenthood will ever return to UK.

I have to admit I dont like watching tele on the computer so tend to wait till things come on virgin media. I did watch Dexter on netflix, tho, with a (long) cable connecting my ipad to the tele! LOL
