Agree with posters that it shouldn't of itself be a sackable offence but as the woman he's left his wife for is the co-host of the American version perhaps the BBC feel it's too close to home and he's damaging the brand? I think the success of the show is down to the team and if their chemistry is damaged by divided loyalties then I'd prefer he left rather than any of the others. But they're all professionals so no doubt they could put it behind them for the cameras if they had to. Perhaps he'll leave of his own accord and move to America to pursue his career with Marcela.

Oh I agree, though isn't he in the US filming the series where he met his alleged mistress? I agree that as Mary Berry is his friend, though presumably knows Mrs Hollywood quite well too, it may be awkward for her. Nevertheless she really should have kept quiet. Defending it with a 'boys will be boys' quote was very damaging to her reputation aswell imo.

I agree, a dignified silence would have be preferable. Though I have to say, my mum is in her late 70's too and would probably have answered in a similar 'what's all the fuss about' manner!:D
How old fashioned it reminds me of Blue Peter sacking one of its presenters because she was pregnant and unmarried. Wasn't this the programme that showed a squirrels nuts? Oh yes very wholesome :D

That was Janet Ellis so that 'controversial' baby will be Sophie Ellis Bextor :)

Seems a ridiculous decision nowadays! Imagine all those little girls being totally corrupted by Janet Ellis :D

It was actually Sophie's younger brother she was expecting, and she wasn't sacked, she has said herself the BBC supported her but she chose to leave.

i thought sue was leaving GBBO this year anyway.

I agree though that its probably the fact that its his co-presenter on the US version that puts his job in danger - damaging the brand. When a presenter's private life is getting more attention than the show it's a problem.:(

Get him replaced by Alex Polizzi's husband, Marcus. He's a breadmaker too!

I agree with "it's all about the brand".
This is The GREAT BRITISH Bake off and the show has sold itself on it's wholesome image of nice ladies and gentlemen slaving over a hot baking bowl.Wholesome ingredients in the goods as well as in the personalities presenting and judging . Hollywood playing hide the salami with an American cutie kind of mars the image.

What was it was said about Wallis Simpson when an American Journalist said "but wallis is a cutie" ? Something like "Quite, but England doesn't want a Queen Cutie".
In this case I think England doesn't want a bloke who has dumped his wife fronting their wholesome show.
I say dump him just for being up his own bottom and buying the hype he is irreplaceable.
Put the lovely Brendan on in his place. He was adorable, gentle and knowledgable and will have gained experience re media since his time on the show .

And Rick Stein. Is it something about being new to fame at an older age? Obviously they are flattered to death and believe their own publicity. Add in a young woman who likes a solvent male and theres the formula for an egocentric making a prat of himself.

And Heston Blumenthal. And this new woman, Marcela, looks like a Barbie doll.

She's defending him with the old 'boys will be boys' BS.

I thought she was mad to make that comment. Okay, he's a good friend so defend him if you want, but to say 'boys will be boys' as if it just doesn't matter that he's destroyed his family makes me think rather differently about Mary.

A few months ago I saw a very old cookery programme with A very young Paul Holywood and equally young James Martin. They both came across as the biggest sleazes going.

That's v. interesting. I have never taken to James Martin.

I think Mary's been quite business savvy with this answer. Right now we don't know how much Paul being in the dog house will affect the next GBBO. What she's done may be damage limitation, because it at least gives the impression, their relationship is unharmed, so that we believe the harmony between them on screen is still the same and genuine. Whereas, if we thought Mary was secretly seething beneath the surface, the whole show seems disingenuous.

I don't think it accomplishes anything like that at all. If she wanted to give the impression that regardless of his personal life, their relationship was okay she could easily have said something like "it's sad but it's Paul's business and I will respect that."

In fact, the more I think about it "boys will be boys" may be a thinly veiled swipe at him. It's hardly complimentary when talking about a 47 year old man.

She might be a great cook/baker,but she was stupid making that comment. Far better to have said nothing.
I wonder if Mary Berry ever went to dinner or socialised with Hollywood & his wife ? If she did I think Mrs Hollywood will be very hurt at that thoughtless childish retort.
Anyway as the 'cupcake' involved has boasted of bagging "a wealthy famous Englishman" then we can see the attributes that attracted her to Paul Hollywood .

It was quite a flippant remark. He's a 47-year old husband and father, not a child in a sweet shop! He needs to grow up.

Mary didn't really need to elaborate on the subject other than to say "it's his business' and not allow herself to be drawn any further.

I wonder how long it is before he trades this new one in for a newer model? I'm guessing that people who aren't loyal or get a divorce after talking things over first never change.

While I have no clue what has been said between him and his wife I think she played a blinder by bobbing off on holiday while he clears his things from the home. She has gone to Cyprus with their son and has posted tweet-pics of champagne with comments of how lovely it all is. Cyprus is where they first met and where he wooed her with champagne confections baked just for her. ;) OUCH ! Take that Paul.

Oh,and apparently because of the backlash of this story among American viewers the Show they did together has been heavily edited to the point where they barely interact at all other than when necessary .....so there is no evident flirting or eyelash batting in the manner of her OTT flirty tweets to him.

The pilot 'Pies and Tarts' got the worst ratings CBS has ever had for a Wednesday night debut with critics describing it as 'doughy', 'shapeless' and 'half-baked' so his plan to become a 'global' star hasn't got off to a great start. The BBC have said his job on GBBO is safe but Marcela has made it clear she has no plans to come and live in England so watch this space ...

    HMM....interesting.
I suspect the Brit version will suffer too though. I'll be watching it no matter what, because I like the show and he is only one part of it,despite what he might imagine. But there are people genuinely disgusted to the point of foregoing the show while he is in it & I think ratings will drop.
Re Marcela coming here.....I doubt she would be well received and I think she knows that at this point. The publicity has not done either of them any favours.
What should have been a sneaky affair where they both scratched an itch and then quietly went back to the real world has become a Romeo & Juliette scenario in their minds .

Seriously, there is truth in the fun mantra " What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas".;)

The wife will be after the bread. He could be burnt, egg on his face, though his choices took the biscuit. All over a tasty tart. A rising star due a grilling on all sides.

According to this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2334242/Can-Mary-Berry-pull-Great-British-Make--Paul-Hollywoods-fighting-save-marriage-career-And-knows-just-woman-help-him.html he's already desperate for his wife to take him back and has asked Mary Berry to help reconcile them. Apparently his wife has a half share in both his companies so he's going to be financially crippled if she divorces him. Also while his role on GBBO is safe for the current series the BBC have refused to give him assurances that he will still have a job after it has aired in the summer.

If I was his wife I would not take him back. I can't stand men who cheat and lie to their wives. Some man I know has slept with prostitutes and his wife knows nothing about it. I wish she would find out about his cheating because I do feel sorry for her and their children.

What he has done is wrong, will it damage the GBBO brand no, the show is way too successful and whilst possibly for the first few episodes there will be grumblings and a bit in the red tops etc, it will wear off as the show is bigger than the presenters (except Mary lol)

He is a fool but who knows what goes on behind closed doors, the marriage must have been hanging by a thread for him to jump ship so quickly. He took a risk for reasons best known to him and his wife
