I agree that he's actually making valid points there. The thing a lot of people I know have taken issue with (and I agree) is his stupid use of the word 'rape' in this context. There is only one thing that is like rape, and that IS rape.

Good points but very poor phrasing, Ray.
I agree he's making valid points, but I do wonder who he voted for. If he voted Tory I bet he won't be complaining when they give the rich all the tax breaks they say they'll be handing them. If he voted Labour, perhaps he should stick it out and see if they get in next time around and what they'll actually do.
Also agree that the use of the word 'rape' is in pretty poor taste in this context.
I wonder if those who are telling him to clear out etc have actually read the quotes. We ARE being heavily taxed and I for one am seeing little or nothing for for my money. I do feel as if I am being ripped off, if not raped, of everything I've ever worked for and had hoped to enjoy in my later life.

He's only saying what the majority of us feel.
We're being heavily taxed now and it's the same whoever's in government. The 'little people' will always suffer. Mr Winstone is well off enough to be miserable in comfort. If he goes to hospital, he can pay to go private. If his elderly parent has to go in a home, he can pay for them to have the best care.
OK, being rich doesn't exempt him from having a moan, but I bet he won't be moaning when the government start handing out tax breaks to the rich. When they do, let's see if Ray will be altruistic and hand his back whilst saying ''I don't want/need this - I'm giving it back to the Treasury so it can help others worse off than me''.
Yep to both these posts. Absolutely nothing wrong with his opinion but typical of the sneering attitudes of some people in this country who hate anyone who has done alright for themselves expressing an opinion out loud, despite the fact the same opinion is being repeated in pubs and offices throughout the country.
I agree with a lot of what he says but them I'm a 40% tax payer so my opinion is obviously far less valid than someone on benefits
I know! I guess that bitter, begrudging attitude so prevalent here towards anyone who's doing well is another thing that erodes a person's liking for living here and makes them consider moving somewhere less draining. Whine whine whine moan moan moan begrudge begrudge begrudge. It's pathetic.
And no, you can't have an opinion. Go back to your mansion and keep quiet.

Rape can also simply mean plunder or pillage, or alternatively seize or carry off with force. His usage is correct, you have just assigned it to mean a sexual attack presumably.

It is really insulting that the use of this word has been made such a big deal, as you said the use was correct and, personally, i like to be treated as a grown up by the media, THIS and the tax issue make me want to hop on a plane and leave this gawd awful country!!!

You are assuming his issue is with his personal finances. As you say, he can afford to go private, so that may not be his concern. He may not have an issue with the taxes if he thought they were being well spent.
It seems weird to say he has enough money to not need NHS care, so he shouldn't moan about hospitals closing. Isn't it better that the rich care about such things than having them say "heh, its only the poor who suffer so not my problem."

He couldn't win whatever he said.
Champagne Socialist perhaps? Even worse than Champagne Tories.
To be honest, he doesn't sound too bad in that article. Not looked up the whole interview, but based on the quotes there, all he is saying is that we're being taxed heavily and aren't seeing anything worthwhile in return. His problem didn't seem to be the taxes, but that high taxes don't seem to be resulting in better infrastructure in return.
He also didn't seem to be "threatening" to leave. More that he thinks the government are ripping us off and he's had enough of it. To be fair, its what most people seem to think anyway!
Of course the govt is ripping us off -- they always have! And everyone is facing swinging taxes and lack of money!:rolleyes:
And who cares if he does go?

Nice scenario, but it won't happen.
Wait, so...because he pays more in tax, he should moan less?
Just in case, in the future, he may benefit from something that may happen?
Hmmm....yes, that makes so much sense.
He is full of wind.. Threatened to leave once before.. And he is still here.. I remember a few "celebs saying the same when labour ( I think) got into power once .. But none of them left either

How utterly utterly sh*t was The Sweeny??
John Thaw>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ray Winstone.
John Thaw could play any role. Morse, Regan, Monsieur Renard, Kavanagh QC, Mister Tom - all very, very different.
All Winstone can play is a London thug. Henry VIII - what a joke.
Harry Hill does Henry VIII.

On the other hand Sean Connery threatened to come back and didn't!

"Ere......ANNE......wotcha tawkin' abaaart!!!"
If you need a hand with yer luggage, give me a shout . .
I hope he does go. And I hope he takes that dreadful daughter with him since she is pointless too.
But don't let the truth get in the way of outrage, I suppose.
Absolutely spot on
