Might skip it. From the trailer it looks generic as hell. Plus it's from M Night Shyamalan who hasn't made a good film in years.

    what's the hate for him?

Seems everybody hates him because of the last airbender.....

    is he that bad?

I don't hate him gratuitously like most people seem to do , in fact I think he's a really good director (or at least was). The Last Airbender was atrocious yeah but so was The Lady In The Water. Shyamalan has made 3 terrific movies with Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense and Signs. Ever since The Village though he's gone downhill, making each film worse than before. So much so that he's now making generic sci-fi/fantasy blockbusters.

It just looks like Will Smiths version of Avatar for me. They even have a 'flying' sequence. I can't think it will be anything other than an awful generic sci fi attempt.

I would try to keep an open mind on this,
but the recent appearance of Will and Jaden
Smith on Graham Norton, did not convince me
that Jaden, has anything like a fraction of his
fathes charisma or talent.Okay,I know he is only
    about 14 years old,but how many sons/daughters
of sucessful parents, follow in their footsteps, but
    totally fail to make it?
Plus I agree that M Knight Shamalamadingdong
has been on a rather downward spiral lately?

I'll pass on this one too I think.

Aside from Sixth Sense and Unbreakable M Knight hasn't done anything worth watching.
I'm not convinced on Jayden either.

...had a palpable air of desperation about it.

I don't think the muddy visuals are selling it - a horrible cgi mess. It was also recently brought forward a week - perhaps (as some think) to give it more space between Man of Steel which would've landed on its second weekend.

And the early reviews are terrible.

Well, The Village, Signs, Airbender and Lady in the Water just speak for themselves.

From the trailer it just seems to me like it's The Pursuit of Happyness crossed with Avatar.

    I'll give it a miss.

Reviews have started to come out. It's currently at 7% on Rotten Tomatoes. Seems like we have a contender for worse popcorn movie of 2013.

I'm sure he's a lovely guy. But he's responsible for "The Happening," being something that exists in the world and for that he should never be forgiven.

^ You could, admittedly, see the potential in The Happening. But trying to outrun the wind and talking to plants perhaps wasn't making the best of it.

After Earth a lowly 32 on Metacritic with only two positives so far.

Oh dear. Is it a dud? ....nod your head.

Smith on his own then maybe but his son irritates me, no charisma and living off his dads name.

Will Smith is fine. I can't be bothered with him pushing his son though. "The Happening" was so bad it was good. "Oh noes!!!1!! It's the killer breeze!". So even if it has bad reviews I may enjoy it. But on bluray, not in the cinema.
