My kids play on the PS3 quite a lot and then when I go to play a BR disc, it sometime shuts down. Google has suggested this could be down to overheating. Can anyone recommend a cooling fan to attach to or sit below the PS3?

Does it shut down during their gameplay? How long after them playing are you trying to view a disc?
Are you trying to play the same movie each time or are different ones causing the problem?
Can you hear it?
......Have you checked the auto shut-off settings?
The system can be configured to turn itself off after as little as an hour of no controller input, even if you're watching a movie.
Check in Settings > Power Save Settings > System Auto-Off
