Shawshank Redemption is best film ever??
According to the IMDB rankings!
Now don't get me wrong, I like The Shawshank Redemption. I think it's a neat story, well-told. It's pace is good - not too short, not overlong - the acting is credible and it's very much a linear 'beginning, middle, end' Hollywood-style morality tale. The sort of film that if you caught it one night on Channel Four you'd say you really enjoyed.
But the best film EVER? Really? Better than Schindler's List and 12 Angry Men? Better than Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas and Psycho? Or Jaws, Alien, Citizen Kane and Casablanca?
Surely not. It's a fine film. Possibly in the Top 100 of all time, but not THE top.

As for Shawshank... its up there for me as one of the all time greats yes !
It's popular and well known, and has grown in status amongst the general population.
But I think that there are other films which are as good as or better, but are either lesser known or so obscure that many people haven't seen them.
It's subjective, it could be the worst film ever, but as long as you enjoy it that's all that matters. Who cares if everyone else hates it? It's not up to them, nor should it be...
But that is of course, just my opinion.
Shawshank is in my personal top 10, definitely top 5 though not number 1, but for me it's certainly one of the all-time greats. What anyone else thinks of it doesn't really matter to me at all.
Exactly. Well spotted. IMDb tries to filter out the fanboy effect but is only partially successful. You've only got to look at the ranking of some of the franchises; even the mediocre Batman and Lord of The Rings films have ridiculously high placings.
...and as GandalfsFeet says its only his second favourite, surely he too should be saying the poll is wrong, rather than saying "How can you deny it?". He denies it as soon as he says it is only number two on his list.
I'm with Barry Norman on this: the greatest film ever hasn't been made yet.
Wouldn't argue with that!
i agree with this.
without sounding like a film snob i always find the people who claim it is the best film they've ever seen tend to not know much about films :-0
(i think it's good and well made but that's it, nothing special)
Goodfellas should be higher!
I'd put that top 5 at least.
