Lady Gaga was at the top of the charts 2009/2010 but seems to have lost that spark which set her apart from the rest. She would have easily beat artists like Katy Perry in the past and now is struggling. The media and critics seem to be going against her, im baffled. Maybe she tried to do to much to soon.
Thoughts.
Applause is still a success but nothing compared to the likes of Poker Face, Bad Romance, Just Dance

I saw The Monster Ball live - BTW tour just looked dull.
Sing the song, put on a great show. You are not Andy Warhol you are a pop star.
Her big test now is future singles from ARTPOP and the success of ARTPOP itself. If it sells less than BTW then her party might be on the decline. Its only then when we can fully judge.
I think her main problem has always been too much too soon. She basically did every style within such a short space of time it left her with little avenues to explore. This is evident by the return to TFM style with Applause. She hasn't gone forward. She has gone backwards.
I also think overhype and too much expectation has limited her greatly. I don't think Gaga was ever a good song writer. She is good at simple pop but that's all this is. The likes Lana and Adele are genuinely amazing at writing songs. Gaga just isn't. I also think the competition since 2009 has increased so she doesn't stand out like she used to.
One final thing. Teen girls can relate to Rihanna and Katy more than they can Gaga. If you are seen as weird or a freak, worse still uncool to support, then kids won't buy into you! This happened to the Spice Girls. They were massive for a period and couldn't do anything wrong. Then almost over night it became uncool to like them. I see the same happening to Gaga.
Then of course there is sections of her fans who have pissed off almost every other fan group going. They are basically responsible for alienating her. Well done for that.
Applause is horrific and sounds like a filler/demo track. Her fans went from saying Applause would be number 1 in the US within two hours, to it then being 6 hours, to it then being 8 hours, to it now being excuses as to why people aren't buying it. It's quite hilarious to watch. Her fans have a lot to do with it too, they are the worst fan group of any artist, you say you don't like something on twitter and are bombarded with death threats from these 'Little Monsters'.
The section of the show she did at that Radio 1 shindig where she basically sat at the piano singing (with IIRC that jazz trumpeter bloke) was extraordinarily good...she's clearly a very talented musician when you strip away all the superfluous stuff. But there's no way she has the sort of fan base that sort of stuff would sell to imo.
I mean that's not to say the likes of Katy, Britney, Rihanna ect aren't generic themselves but their aim seems to be to put out good solid pop songs, gaga is concentrating too much elsewhere like it matters.
The fans that love her for how extravagent she is might drop away, but there's the chance she will pick up a new legion of fans who prefer the more "normal" her?
Her quality of music has gone down since the FM, but her nutty fans think it's the best ever.
She also thinks she's some kind of God or Saint and her LM eat it all up.
She should also stop announcing things so soon, people get bored 18 months later.
The girl can sing, she can play the piano, stick to what you are good at. Lay off the drugs and thinking you are the bees knees she would be a lot more likeable. If you're music is good enough you don't need to deny ripping off people, pretend to live in an egg and walk around in a meat dress.
Bjork can do it! but she isn't trying to be number 1, she does it because she's Bjork.
FANTASTIC POST! Very clear you summed it up completely to the point! This is exactly what is wrong
Like so many bands and artists before, the "difficult third album" will be average at best. I'm sure that her die-hard fans will probably buy it and praise it, but, in their heart of hearts, they won't like it as much as the first two, and it won't win her any new fans.
Nobody will give a damn about all the arty-farty nonsense if she isn't releasing good stuff regularly.
You might see her performing at Haven or Butlins next summer.
However when Born This Way came along, the 'strangeness' completely over shadowed the music and almost made it impossible for the casual fan to enjoy the music because it was so hidden below everything. I know that I just want to listen and enjoy an album, not have to decode everything she does.
Now ARTPOP has come along, it just feels stale and like it's been done before. I mean this towards the single AND the 'feel' to the era. For comparison (like KP as much as Gaga) the way Katy Perry launched her era felt really fresh. She kept her mouth shut and let the unique video teasers and the incredible lyrics video do all the talking and has pulled it off incredibly (and that's without taking about the actual single Roar)
That completely covers it.
I love the born this way album and play it all the time and I have high hopes for the new album. I just don't need the gimmicks
you can't keep hyping up releases as groundbreaking artistic events only to deliver bad eurovision and expect the trick to keep working
she should it try the other way around one day, playing it low key and then releasing something people might want to hear more than once which they don't have to pretend to like
Blasphemy. Eurovision = good.
IMO I think she is as great now as she was 4 years ago, most people slate BTW but I absolutely loved it, fun, upbeat, catchy, some interesting experimentations on dance tracks like Scheisse and Americano kept me very interested and I am genuinely excited for her third album, and I say this as a normal, casual Gaga fan, I love her music but I am not a stan, I don't pay attention to the hype and "gimmicks" because all I do is go out, buy the album and enjoy the album, I only religiously keep up to date with my absolute favourite artist who is Britney Spears, but I still love Gaga and her music. And I think her new single is great.
