trying to install Mcafee updates but ....

....it only ever reaches 66% completed. Why?
Also I keep getting a message saying my anti virus protection isn't switched o', so I switch it on, I get a few seconds of green 'Your computer is protected' then it goes red and 'Your computer isn't protected' message shows.

Why are you wasting time/money on McAfee?

I thought it was supposed to be good. What would you suggest I replace it with?

Avast is free and the 2014 release is brilliant, boot time scan option, create a USB rescue disk option, web shied, software update check built in for any out of date / vulnerable software on your machine, good detection rates, low performance impact, lots of heuristics, nice web UI, see all machines you own including mobile with a status for each machine from any client's UI.

I had a similar problem to this although it was a few years ago now so whether it is exactly the same I don't know. It didn't seem to like the real-time protection and kept switching itself off. I would switch it back on again and it would switch off again a few seconds later. I contacted McAfee for help and eventually they just told me to uninstall and re-install again. This seemed to work but needless to say I did not renew my contract.

Freebies like Avast, AVG, Avira or just MS Security Essentials.

Kaspersky Internet Security. Works well on my parents' Windows 7 laptops and they haven't had a single virus or other nasty since they installed it. Best thing to do is follow McAfee's advice and uninstall it ;)

Thanks for all advice. I'll try uninstalling it and see how that goes, if no luck you've given me loads of choice, much appreciated, many thanks.
