Do you lose respect for actors who do nude/sex scenes?

Imagine you're an actor/actress who's been nude in a film. When you meet a stranger who's seen the film, wouldn't you be uncomfortable knowing that they've seen your private parts and could possibly be fantasizing about you? If they've seen the film on DVD, they can rewind or watch in slow motion as much as they want. I find that quite disturbing.

What do you think?

Yes. I watch a movie to be entertained, not watch smut for 15 minutes each time. If I wanted to do that i'd window browse on POF.

So what's the difference between fantasizing about someone you have seen naked and fantasizing about how someone might look naked?

Hmm. Generally, no. So I voted no.

But there are very occasionally scenes where the actress involved clearly didn't need to show as much as they did - take Eva Green's close up shots of her genitalia by Mr pervy Bertolucci in The Dreamers - shots that added nothing to the scenes themselves and were merely to titillate (Bertolucci has since admitted himself that he was obsessed with her in that regard).

Most actresses would have said no to that. But Eva agreed to it. Whether she regrets it, who knows (it did get her noticed in Hollywood). But that's the problem with going too far on film - one mistake or misjudgement from an actress and it stays on film (and the internet) for ever.

But even in those cases, I probably wouldn't "lose respect" for an actress. Perhaps more a sense of feeling sorry for them if they had done something they regret.

I have a somewhat pervy deranged view on this.

There are plently of good looking actresses that i'd like to see in the buff.
On the otherhand sex scenes in mainstream movies are usually pretty pointless.

The other issue is the actresses who say they'll never do a nude scene..........until it suits them (Ms Portman ;))
Don't think Alba has been nude. She uses body doubles, but still shows flesh and does simulated sex.

And for some it's like that old joke from Dennis Pennis ....... "Are there any circumstances, if it wasn't gratuitous and it was tastefully done, would consider keeping your clothes on in a movie"

Only if they make a stand against nudity when they blow up, only to backtrack in their early 30's after the scripts aren't piling up any more.

Would anyone ask this about riding a bicycle or eating a biscuit or even shooting a gun?

It's because of backward cultural baggage (i.e. religion), and the way we choose to view sex and nudity, that it's considered an issue in the first place. Sex is a normal, natural part of life, and I have no problem with actors who go nude or do sex scenes.

If there are actors who can be hypocritical over it, it's to be expected, given the hypocrisy society in general has over sex and nudity.

I respect those actors who go ahead and do a nude scene when required, rather than using a body double.

Sex in-and-of itself is natural, but doing it in public or on screen is not. Defecation is also perfectly natural, but that doesn't mean it should be done in public. It's a private thing.

What's that new moving that's coming out with all the actual sex acts in it...

I find that kind of thing utterly pointless. Tacky.

Plenty of them over the years, and not just in porn :p

There have been several indie movies with unsimulated sex and that's just the UK/US.
The Europeans have loads of them.

If they are going to do it they should do it wholesale.

    Hell no!

You've only got to look at Kate Winslet's career, Helen Hunt's performance in "The Sessions", Holly Hunter in "The Piano", Michael Fassbinder & Carey Mulligan in "Shame", etc, etc.
None of it gratuitious and enhanced the performances. Proper committed acting.

Where I lose respect are the actresses/actors who use nudity as a publicity tool, such as; Halle Berry in "Swordfish" and Jennifer Aniston in "Wanderlust" (and even then she bottled it!).
Also those who use body doubles or CGI "nudity". Jessica Alba = Repeat offender!

Why would anyone lose respect for an actor because they took their clothes off on screen??

The human body is nothing to be ashamed of.

Love to see good looking women naked but sometimes the plot has no reason for nudity and it could appear that the actress has done it for attention and/or a bigger paycheck.

On the other hand there are scenes in films where the actors are doing everyday things like taking a bath/shower and the show them naked, or sitting/lying in bed, getting dressed etc.

A little annoyance is bed scenes where the woman gets out of bed and takes the covers with them.

I watched a film recently where a couple where in the bathroom. The man was at the mirror shaving and the woman was in the bath and they were having a conversation. The conversation added to the plot. The nudity was natural.

A 10 second clip of a woman showering really doesn't add anything to a plot of a film on it's own.
Hitchcock may disagree with that last part :p

Not at all. Their job is to portray characters in body and in word.

As for your second question, i would disassociate myself from anything i did for the camera. Also, just because someone has seen you naked, it doesn't give them any power over you.

But why is it unnatural to do it in a movie? Seems to me that the proscription is almost entirely based on religion and tradition and nothing else.

I wouldn't particularly want to see shitting on the silver screen, but that's because I think defecation would be really unpleasant to watch. So I'd just avert my eyes for any scene with stuff like that unless it makes sense for the movie, i.e. Trainspotting or Schindler's List.

On the other hand, sex is beautiful and exciting, or at the very worst, just uninteresting. I just don't understand the comparison between watching a couple having sex and someone taking a crap.

Haven't seen the first two, but Monica Bellucci was terrific in Irreversible. It was critical to the plot - the brutality of the rape contrasts with the playful, affectionate sensuality of the scene she shares with Vincent Cassel. Rape scenes are not the same as normal sex scenes, for obvious reasons.

Seems to me that the OP has a big problem if he/she thinks that defecation is comparable to the naked body. How very odd.

In the end of the day, taking one's clothes off in a film doesn't add or subtract respect. It depends more on the context for why it was done than just simply some simplistic black-and-white view upon the naked body and sex.

Defecation and urination are only considered a 'private' thing because that's what we're all taught as children. It's nothing more than a collective social construct with no real meaning other than a natural bodily function. Being revolted by it makes as much sense as being revolted by someone sneezing or coughing or, if you get right down to it, even breathing in public. Some things are considered acceptable others are not without the slightest regard for logic or common sense. Just ask a nurse if they think simple defecation is some sacred thing that can only be carried out in private, and to see such a thing would be abhorrent or unnatural.

And remember it wasn't too long ago, in the great scheme of things, that royalty had their own personal poo catcher who's job it was to make sure royal stools were delivered in an as easy a way as possible. People even fought for the job to become a privy council. Over the years we've become far too precious about so many mundane things, bodily waste being but one of them.

    Regards

    Mark

No, infact I gain respect for them because it's not an easy thing to do. You defintly have to be confident as an actor to do that.
