it could be burning up a fair bit of juice so now Im thinking,
why not turn it off when I turn off the comp
Yeah, everytime you switch it back on it will have to re-sync.
It remembers what the situation was before you switched off, your line profile, and thus will come back as before when you switch back on again.
I regularly have mine switched off for up to a month and this has never been interpreted as a fault.
You will find your internet connection goes off/on sometimes early morning for short periods anyway when they do maintenance at the exchange/line etc.
The reason ISPs say keep it switched on 24/7 is because initially there a period of 10 days when your line is profiled. Thus if you change ISP you should leave it on initially for at least 10 days continuously, but after that feel free to switch on/off as required.
If there is a major change in your line then it will initiate a re-profiling, thus you should also have it on for that 10 days at some point. Minor changes are dealt with by the system as it dynamically adjusts.
Sure it resyncs, but then so does a TVs clock/program guide.
Costs are not great, mine consumes ~10 watts, hence it's warm, that's 0.24 kilowatt hrs per day, so you can work out the electricity cost, not much.
Thanks Helmut... I think you ve nailed it there
think in future, esp if I go away for a day or two... Ill unplug it.
Otherwise I only turn it off when my internet radio can't find a signal - it's fine after a reboot .
