Should I return my new HDD?

It's a Samsung M3 500GB USB3 portable hard drive.
For the first few days it seemed to be okay, but when I tried to copy a file from it onto a laptop it stopped midway with the error message 'error reading from file or disk'. Tried copying the file again, this time onto a different drive and it worked.
Then I noticed it was reporting ridiculous 'time remaining' when copy new files to the drive.
I ran CHKDSK and it fixed bad clusters it found in the file I had issues copying. However CHKDSK got stuck at stage 5, the checking free space for errors phase, remaining on the same percentile even after several hours.
I am now trying to format the drive as a last resort, but after 3 hours it's still only on 5%!
Was this a bad buy, or is it just a faulty drive?

Following your suggestion, I tried SeaTools and it failed the short generic test.
As it's still within the 30 day return period I will return it to Amazon.
It's easy to be put off a make of hard drive when you have one that fails, but you have to remember that all drives fail and all manufacturers will have a number of premature failures. It mainly comes down to luck, which is why backups are essential.
Just noticed that Amazon have the 1TB version for £13 more, so I'd get a refund and go for that.
Most IT equipment will generally die in the first couple of weeks or work well for years from what i've noticed so just return it and get a new drive
i had a samsung spinpoint 500gb that died years back i rember just getting installing windows it frozze after that there was clicking from the drive returned it straight away
intrestingly they included the instruction for an IDE drive and it was sata lol
