Some do it with a spoon too, it's holding it delicately in a upper class posh manner.

Imaging if they had wans they would do the same.

If you do that you'd be laughed at by the upper classes you're no doubt trying to impress.

I have no idea as it is considered extremely ill mannered to do so.
We were always taught not to as kids.. Its like putting elbows on the table

Brilliant thread with some very humorous observations :):D .

I don't stick my pinky out when drinking a cup of tea, and I've no idea why anyoine else does.

This reminds me of the scene from Birdcage with Robin Williams when he's trying to get his partner to act straight :D:D

I expect it alters the centre of gravity of the 'hand-cup' system, leading to better balance and less chance of spillage.

They should do some experiments on people who've had their little fingers amputated to see if they spill their tea more than the average of multi-fingered people.

I think it must be a statement. A "look at me, I dare to hold a teacup with my finger sticking out. Bow down to me and worship me as a demigod, for I am your master." Or not. :D

Started with medieval knights and their three finger technique of eating food.
Considered a man’s drink until King Charles II’s consort introduced tea at court as the fashionable breakfast drink to replace ale 1678 The East India Company began to import tea commercially.
A luxury only aristocrats could afford
Mistakes were made in the preparation of tea
One gentleman had it served up as green; the water in which the leaves were boiled was thrown away.
:D Bet that put him off tea.

Can't say I know of anyone who sticks their pinky out when holding a teacup and if I ever do see anyone doing so I might find it a little difficult to keep a straight face. :D
