If money was no object then it's a no brainer but if money is an issue then I'd be keeping my eye on the Apple refurb shop to pick up a decent deal, more likely to be last years model. I'm not sure there'd be a massive difference, though.
I'd be tempted to go for a 2011 refurb as it has the optical drive, but I think mum would think I was buying someone else's second hand goods so I would probably have to go for the new one
I bought a mid 2011 model over the new model for 3 main reasons
1. It has an optical drive and I have a lot of CDs to rip.
2. The RAM is upgradable after purchase. On the new model the RAM is soldered to the motherboard so can't be easily upgraded after purchase.
3. The HDD on the 2011 model is faster (7200rpm as opposed to 5400rpm on the new model)
