No point getting into this here really but just to say I disagree that the BBC is impartial. It reports certain issues from a particular standpoint - it's clearly pro 'big government' for one thing plus pro Obama. You only wouldn't notice any of this if your political views were similar. For example watch what it does in the run-up to any EU referendum that we may get. It will be a whitewash of panic about what happens if we leave and giving hardly any airtime to the side that wants us to leave. It will reach epic and absurd proportions in the couple of weeks before.

I've really got no idea why Europeans still trust BBC news - I avoid it these days. I think they're under the illusion that it's as trustworthy as it was a few decades ago.
If you think it's pro 'big government' then you've clearly never seen how it sugarcoats and argues the necessity for the coalition's cuts. I agree it's biased: just look at the fawning coverage of the Royalty, and the borderline jingoism on display for the Olympics, but seeing as how Sky News and 90% of the printed press are infinitely worse it starts to look good.

I am a very frequent visitor to Germany, the North East in particular, and can tell you that the Germans often turn to the BBC news.It is common to go into bars and the BBC News will be running, in the absence of anything else. Their own news on DR references the BBC habitually.

Like the Danes, most Germans in the area speak English well, and are rightly proud of their linguistic abilities. I am aware of multi-national companies in Lower Saxony, North Rhine Westfalia, and the neighbouring regions where English is the lingua franca. In fact, when my son went to Germany to improve his skills, whilst at University, he struggled to get his workmates to speak to him in German.

Sat having a cuppa and reading a mag. Mrs BK has something called Moving On on the TV. Thought I was having a psychotic breakdown - a la Laure!!!

Bjarne Henriksen(He plays Thorsen the Defence Minister and Theis from TK1) and Marian Saastad Ottesen(Sigrid from Lilyhammer) are appearing in this BBC programme. Very weird.

After WWII, English was the first foreign language taught in Danish primary schools (replacing German) and in the Danish educational system French and German are also taught as foreign languages but students start studying those languages later on. Therefore, it's reasonable that PM Birgitte could speak good French.

I see. So Danes are more likely nowadays to speak good English than any other foreign language. I guess German could've stayed as their first language but WWII and being occupied by Germans probably put paid to that.:D

So that makes him the third person from The Killing to appear on a BBC programme....

BTW is it just me or does Marian Saastad Ottesen look like a bit like that Scottish actress that played Ricky Gervais' friend in Extras??

Yep. Sofie, Bjarne and Ann Eleonora, Any others?

Don't like Gervais so can't comment on the Extras link.

    PS
O/T but Van Zandt has been replaced by another guitarist in the E Street Band - so he can start filming S2 of Lilyhammer. I've read S2 is filming right now. But can't find a reliable link for that. Little Stevie will rejoin the Band in April. Just in time for the gig in Oslo.:):)

Benedickte Hansen from Borgen also appeared in TK2 and will be appearing in the forthcoming BBC version of The Lady Vanishes

Then of course Lars Mikkelsen appeared in a one-off ITV drama about Scott and Amundsen

Oh and I can't stand Gervais either

I don't see the likeness myself. But each to their own I suppose.:)

The Lady Vanishes. I wonder if it will be a similar type of co-production to Spies of Warsaw. Which was a bit of a let down IMO. It seemed to be very flat and uninvolving.

I stumbled upon a rather weird review of Borgen today:

Borgan - Danish Blue or Socialist Yellow? (The author's spelling not mine).

Her conclusion: "the whole thing was undermined by the overwhelming sense was that the politics of Denmark are just not important enough to warrant a TV drama of any kind. It was a bit like watching small children dressed up to perform Julius Caesar."

What's slightly worrying is that this woman lives up the road from me and has written an article in the Daily Telegraph saying there are too many Muslims in the area. She's like the Svend Åge of Acton, only less attractive.

Are there any Danes here who are watching series 3?

I read somewhere, (can’t remember where now) :o that we
    don’t see much of Kasper
in this series and I don’t like the sound of that.
    Kasper
    is such a great character.
It won't be the same without him

Pilou Asbaek, who plays Kasper, was on BBC Radio 4 (I think) a few days ago, and he said that Kasper isn't in the third season a lot. Theres a couple of scenes each episode, but not much more. The fifth episode airs in Denmark this Sunday, from what I've seen and read, its very different to season 1 and 2.

Are any Borgen fans going to The Filmhouse in Edinburgh on Sunday for the screening of final 2 episodes of series 2 plus a Q&A with Sidse Babbet Knudsen (PM Birgitte Nyborg)?

I would love to be there as it's easy travelling distance for me but unfortunately I am going to watch my team play an important Scottish Cup match, drat!

Does anybody here know which countries Borgen is/are being shown in and are they all subtitled in each countries' respective languages? If shown in Germany I bet it's dubbed there as they dub virtually everything which is a shame.

This comment on The Guardian blog made me laugh :D

After the successful spinoff series "Bent is Back!" (in which former Finance Minister and stroke recoverer, Bent Sejrø solves murders and international diplomatic problems with a mixture of common sense, Napoleon brandy and Donald Duck comics), DR TV1 presents a new series:

    ...

    "Uncle Bent's Gardening Tips".

    Here is a clip:

"You know politics is a lot like gardening. You plant a seed, feed and water it, and sometimes it comes to fruition, but sometimes it falls on stony ground and comes to nothing.

My career has been a lot like that. I always think back to what my father used to say:

'After all those chips and egg, sausage and beans, what I really needed was a skidt and a cup of Rosy Lee',

"...you see he'd worked on the British version of Convoy, spent a lot of time in England and picked up all the slang, although he did have problems confusing the regional variations, Cor Blimey so 'e did, my old mucker.

    ...

"...My special tip for January: Don't plant any trees. No one plants trees in January......well, except Sarah Lund of course, and look what happened to her".

[A female voice interjects]: "I thought you were going to spend more time with your granchildren Bent Sejrø and looking after your own garden? First you go off chasing around the world, and now you are worrying about other people's garden's..."

Bent: "Ah yes, skat but you see..."

Fru S: "...And another thing, are you still seeing that tart you used to shag in the Folketing stationery cupboard?"

Bent: "That tart as you call her is a very respected parliamentarian, and I think you should..."

Fru S: "....not respected by me she isn't. She's no better than she should be, and as for you, you randy old....[rabbit-rabbit-rabbit]...." [fades out]

Bent: "Oh here's another tip for the male viewers: the one thing you should definitely plant in your garden is a shed. Every man needs a shed. Somewhere to hide from the old bag, er, sorry, from your dear skat. Make sure you lay in plenty of coffee, herbal tea, beer, aquavit and Donald Duck comics, and you'll be well set up."

    "Til næste tid, hej hej".

[Torben Friis voices over]' Don't Miss: "Uncle Bent's Gardening Tips", every Sunday evening, here on DR TV1'

Thanks for that link, Barney06, because it explained something that I wanted to know:

"People in Denmark are also a bit confused," he admits. "I don't know that everyone knows that the guy writing Borgen is also the one standing in front of the camera whipping up a béarnaise sauce." He will also be making a trip to the UK for the Danish equivalent of Who Do You Think You Are? – Price's ancestors left London for Denmark in the late 18th century. And then, fittingly, he has some "nice offers" to consider from British television.

Yes. No more Borgen until 2014 when we will all be much older and wiser.

What do BBC4 have planned for the rest of this year now there’s no more TK, Borgen, The Bridge (still filming S2 IIRC), Wallander, Mentalbaldo (small mercies although isn’t “Young Mentalbaldo” imminent?), Sebastian Bergman etc..? Are they showing Unit One?
