How do they afford it all with a Bakery business
Bakery businesses can do quite well for themselves if they have their own shop selling pies, pasties etc and also supply bread/barms etc to the local area daily. And if you can get well established in the area and get some good contracts it can be a good business model. He clearly works hard at the business.
Plus it wasn't like they weren't having to budget responsibly too. They pointed out how they use cloth nappies to save money.. and don't drink, smoke or go out socialising.. and also do things with food to make it stretch etc. No expensive car on the drive etc. No loans or credit cards either. I saw no evidence they were living beyond their means.. just two adults making difficult decisions to support the large family they've decided to have.
It was a refreshing change from what we're usually shown. Good on them I say.
I thought they seemed a very happy family and I was well impressed how the parents took everything in their stride and very calm. It obviously rubbed off on the kids because although they had their mad moments rolling about etc they did all know to keep quiet when Mum was on the phone.
£160 a week in child benefit wouldn't go far on that lot would it?
I am another who would have liked a bit more explanation of how they coped financially and what their weekly food bills etc came to.
When I was growing up there were several families in our area with 8 and 10 kids but I can't remember any as large as 16.
They seem like a decent family but even the kids look like they think their mum is nuts for having 16 children, my mum is one of 7 and it put her off for life she can never understand what possess people too keep having so many, it does beg the question when is it time to stop though, each to their own I guess but I can understand peoples reaction.
It also goes to show that people who I know who have one kid but both parents work full time and earn >£60,000 so are having child benefits cut, are unlikely to starve to death.
Gawd I'm exhausted just watching this lot....Best of luck to them I say, two children was enough for me!

I have respect for this family. none smokers, none drinkers, do not go out socializing at all
no credit cards, no fancy cars. clean honest living. and all seem quite bright too. bloody hard work bringing all these kids up. there choice though.

One of the smaller boys (10 yr old i think) said he expects to be forgotton about when his mum has another kid (it was when they were talking about how many kids mum will have and they said she could have 20.
I thought it was sad that the boy thought he might fade into the background, so to speak, when another child comes long.
I am sure they are a wonderful family but can't see its possible to give 16 kids equal love or attention no matter what anyone says

for anyone to want 16 kids there has to be something going on with the parents (a need to love or something?) and I don't mean it has to be a bad thing and I am not saying the kids aren't loved. I guess it is just a more shared love which may or may not be a good thing
They weren't the most exciting family - the parents didn't have much personality and only ever talked about kids, how many loads of washing, pints of milk and bread they had to buy.....who cares!! I have to buy 6 pints a week and a loaf every 3 days or so.....wow wasn't that thrilling
At least Jim and Michelle Duggar in America have interesting things to say and do and their show is interesting to watch

This family were in another programme last year with other families that had around the same amount of children. This family shined through ..
Don't get me wrong, seemed like a lovely family , clean, well behaved. But surely they could have educated their children about contraception? Do the girls think that their only option in life is to have babies?
I think the Mum is addicted to pregnancy, but it would seem she has fairly straightforward pregnancies, in the main.
I would just worry about who would look after the kids when/if something happens to you, her parents seemed to find it chaotic while she was in hospital, but then who wouldn't find babysitting that lot daunting, even with help from the older kids and teenagers?
At the beginning of the program, Sue's Dad said Sophie was his favourite, hmm, I wasn't keen on him saying that out loud.

Yes, her she has been with her partner for 2 years. She said Daisy was an accidental pregnancy.
They will both be living in the basement with Daisy.
I thought they were a very nice family, the Dad seemed very very patient - you would need to be. The kids were lovely, reasonably well behaved and thought it cute the way they shared beds even though they didn't have to. But imo it's just too many kids I had two and found them for the most part a pleasure, but any more and I don't think I would have - too much work:o

There is definitely a lot of love in the family, and the unit works, but you need more than that. Currently, the one getting the most satisfaction is the mother. Unfortunately, until the older ones drop away, they will most likely (not for certain) raise average children who won't get that push or support from their parents to aim higher. The children will have to do it off their own backs, and I guess some will have that natural talent or passion, but the parents won't have the time themselves for that extra push and support.
The three younger children will at least go through school then college or university or vocational studies etc. with more attention in 10-12 year's time.
It will be interesting to see what each child will go on to do with their lifes.

I liked the bit when noel worked out how much the dinner cost, 50p each! :eek: bargin.
