Legend Of Hell House is outstanding. I'd also put in a shout for The Eye, the Hong Kong original, though the Jessica Alba remake was okay too. Same goes for The Grudge and the SMG remake.
DO NOT WATCH THE ENTITY. It is soooooooo bad, like ridiculously bad. If you like bad acting, really random use of a soundtrack and a hideously bad plot, watch it...otherwise avoid!
No way, the soundtrack to the Entity is immense! Not so sure about the film though in fairness.
Both the Amityville Horror and Amityville 2: The Possession. The second instalment is one of the creepiest films I've ever seen and really spooked me the first time I saw it.
The original black and white 'The Haunting' still gives me the creeps -.the sound effects and what you CAN'T see gets to you - made in the early 1960s I think.
There's a couple from around that same time not ghost stories really but about the occult: 'Night of the Demon' and 'The Devil Rides Out' - they're pretty scary too.
Dozens of ghost or haunted house type movies made in the 1970's and 80's; many were made for television. There is something really atmospheric about many of them.
The Woman in Black Don't Go to Sleep
Crowhaven Farm
Burnt Offerings
Are some of my personal favourties.
did this one involve 2 sisters ? it rings a bell, being shown on ITV on a saturday night, and was really freaky as I recall

Yep it doesnt get enough attention or respect. Im waiting for it to come out on Bluray.
Never has one simple red ball been so terrifying
One vote for the original version of The Haunting. Despite its age its atmosphere of dread always gives me the willies...
The woman in black is an amazing ghost movie too!
I thought it was a bit boring and predictable
to contribute:
The Orphanage/El Orfanato
Good film if you can handle subtitles
Each to their own.
i picked this one up in Blockbuster, but put it back cos its just a 12 cert..is it scary/creepy ?

Lake Mungo is pretty good.
Maybe a 12 cert, but scares the....out of me.;)
That film had the misfortune to come out the same time a The Six Sense, so was totally eclipsed.
Stir of Echos is the better in mho, it's really unsettling.

that was truly freaky
Quoted for excellent choices
Also might want to expand to foreign language with the likes of:
The Devils Backbone
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Wishing Stairs.
The original Woman in Black.
I thought it was pretty lame, the book was so much better
