Do I need to watch previous James Bond films before I watch Skyfall?

Really want to give bond a shot as the franchise has never interested me but Im really gaining a soft spot for Daniel Craig and I've heard nothing but good things about skyfall. So is it a continuation of the previous two films of Daniel as bond or can is it ok if I watch skyfall without watching any previous films?

If it helps I've casino royale on in the background on sky right now but I'm not really watching as I'm watching something else online.

I think, if you watched the Sean Connery Bond films first then you would understand more of the references and would enjoy the film more.

There were loads of hints and references to previous films, although am sure Bond virgins will still enjoy it

To add to what has been said above. Not necessary but it would help :)

Basically the more you know about previous films the more you will get out of it but if you are not a Bond film then you can still enjoy it but some of the references to previous films will go over your head. I am a huge Bond fan and have seen them all loads of time. So this film was a big event for me. So I loved it and was gobsmacked by the ending probably more than a casual viewer would.

I echo most of the previous comments that you don't NEED to watch any, but I would recommend watching Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldeneye and Casino Royale (with respectful apologies to Timothy Dalton), to give yourself a potted history of Bond before going into Skyfall, it will help round your experience of the film.

I would recommend seeing Craigs first two films if you need something to send you to sleep.

No, in fact it helps a lot if you have seen none at all. This is because each Bond film is just the same film made over and over again.

The critics rave over each one (very important for the British film industry) but they say that the one before last was not very good. I have seen three. I enjoyed them quite a bit, but I don't need to see any more.

I do not think that you do at all. I could not tell any James Bond films in order from their various actors. With the exception of Dr No I see each film as a separate entity.

Yes, especially Octopussy and Moonraker, since Skyfall is a threequel to both.

I would say watch from Goldeneye then all the Pierce Brosnans ones, then move onto Daniel Craigs in order. Those who have watched skyfall will understand why I'm saying this.

After watching skyfall watch the old ones if you havent seen them. Then you really will get it.

I think logic is that you will understand certain references during the film and the reveal at the end which to a first time watcher will mean nothing, but to fans will mean alot.

But why only from Goldeneye onwards? Why only Brosnan and Craig? anyone doing a 'Bond catchup' and not watching a Connery or Moore while including Die Another Day is quite simply mental.

Oh yeah I totally misread that when I first saw it, for some reason In my head I read it as from Goldfinger onwards then all the Brosnan ones.:o
Now I've woken up I see it and now don't see the logic :D

Probably a reference to Judi Dench's version of M and her fate

That makes sense I guess, rather shortsightedly I hadn't thought of it like that.

Maybe im looking at it wrong, but in a chronological way it doesn't work though, as didn't Brosnans Bond refer to her as the 'New M' before we saw them both together? And he also mentioned to M where her predecessor kept his whiskey.
She may of played the same character, but they were different and at completely different stages of Bonds career so not sure how there can be any references to those previous appearances.
