I'm due an upgrade in 3 weeks. Have currently been using an HTC wildfire s for the last two years and have always been frustrated with the lack of memory. My OH has an s3 so I was thinking just go for s4 but I have an iPad that I use loads so I wonder if I should go for an iPhone for compatibility (if that really matters?) or maybe even something different.
Would be grateful to hear some advice / experience.

If you were to compare technical specs, many Android phones are superior to Apple. But I decided to get an iPhone because I liked the compatibility between the two devices.
Functions such as safari reading list, podcast resume from last play sync and iMessage all work well between two or more iOS devices. The iOS7 operating system in September will take this further with notification sync.
There are also some good deals out there. I bought an iPhone5 from 3 / Carphone warehouse for £100, £25pm with unlimited data, 1000 mins and 5000 texts.
Despite all of the above, I do find it frustrating how Apple (and I dare say others), try to lock you in to their eco system.

Callander, contacts sync with each other (as does email obviously). Use google music on both....
Using safari on a pc, mac and ipad they sync with each other, as would chrome if you signed in with a google account.
Personally, I think apple make the best tablets by far....and android are the best phones. I have the best of both.
Wife used to have an iPhone and ipad....once she had the ipad she saw no reason to keep the iPhone and got an s3.
The reason im not saying iPhone is because I do not think its worth enough to compete with the above newer devices
Any Android phones mentioned here are going to be a much smoother and faster version of the wildfire with a better screen
Personally I still think the Nexus 4 is the best Android phone to get for the specs, value for money and there is no crap ware installed. And you can be sure to get the latest Android versions when they are released.
