Who was the most famous actor to play the Doctor?
c what i did there?
anyway was thinking as to who is perceived to be the most famous actor to have played the role.
After a while i concluded Peter Davidson for the TV
and Peter Cushing for films.

See what I did there?
Cart count him yet, as its no aired:)
After a long and arduous process of argument, counter argument and a series of heats to whittle down the competition I would concur with that opinion.
But I could be persuaded otherwise.
If we include Peter Cushing, he was undoubtedly the most famous, internationally and domestically.
I guess part of it may be that he was mainly in British films, back when Britain had a full-blown film industry? With Hollywood still there to celebrate Hollywood history, the cultural relevance of British films in the 40s, 50s and 60s is easy to forget.

It said 'Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor', without saying 'Next Time' or 'Coming Soon' or anything like that. So I count him!
Also, you know, I'm feeling contrary.
fair enough ,
If we are talking at the time its peter Davison.
Yes i was thinking at the Time of there signing.
But that's bollocks because John Hurt has appeared on screen in costume and speaking lines and credited as The Doctor. And he's famous. Everyone saw his caligula in the seventies and shan't forget it in a hurry.
But on the other hand Peter Cushing is the most famous person ever and he was the Doctor first (unless you're one of those peculiar people who think it doesn't count). Star Wars was headed for dismal failure, but when word got out that the actor who played the human inventor called Doctor Who was the star, the world rushed to buy a ticket. They were a bit puzzled by the screen time given to less important actors, but the happiness generated from his performance was enough to ensure good reviews despite that obvious flaw.
Its only really been Tom Baker and Matt Smith who were a bit "who are they?"
Overall I would say its a toss up between Eccelston and Davison
At a guess I'd say Troughton, who starred in the BBC's original 6-part Robin Hood series and had appeared in numerous TV shows prior to taking on the part of the Doctor, whereas Davison was really just known for All Creatures Great And Small.
Personally, I'd never heard of McCoy, Eccleston and Smith. Tennant only because he was in Casanova and Tom Baker from Nicholas & Alexandra and Sinbad. Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Davison, Colin Baker and McGann were all well known from films, TV or radio.
Of course it all depended on what your viewing/listening habits were at the time:)
And sink or swim. 2 incredibly popular programmes at the time.
Ah! He has a point you know...
And then there's Joanna Lumley, Mr Bean, etc.
Hartnell was very famous. But McGann I think gets it.
