I want to send a cheque for a reasonable amount through the post. What is the best method to use that will reduce the possibility of some thieving postie running off with it?
Provided that the cheque is crossed you should be OK:
Can a cheque be paid into the account of someone other than the named payee?
If the cheque is crossed 'A/C payee' it can only be paid into the account of the named payee. The crossing cannot be deleted, nor can the cheque be transferred over to a third party.
If you are paying a cheque to a large organisation such as the Inland Revenue, do not make the cheque payable simply to that organisation. Add further details into the payee line (for example Inland Revenue re: J Jones, your reference xxyyzz). You should draw a line through any unused space on the cheque so unauthorised people cannot add extra numbers or names. (please see pdf leaflet on the right)
Hey
We wanted to send my partners neice and nephew some money at christmas either a cheque or actual notes and we wernt sure what way to send it, my partners father mentioned that whenever he sends money he also sends a little letter and wraps the letter around the note or the cheque! My partners neice and nephew where actually more pleased with the little letter as it was so personal!
Then it obviously wouldn't be worth it. But since the OP was asking for suggestions on sending a reasonable amount of money, it's perfectly reasonable to suggest a method they could do just that.

Just send it Royal Mail Signed For, if you are worried though.

Most cheques are now ready-printed with "A/C Payee" or "Account Payee" anyway. However, if your cheques aren't, you should add the crossing yourself.
They charge for CHAPS
£20. But it's safe, and gets there immediately.
What if the OP was sending £20 or even £50?
