Need a new console – PS3 or wait to buy the PS4/Xbox One

Hi everyone,
I’ve only been into gaming for the last 18 months. The only other time I’ve gamed is when I had a PS1, back in the day. I’m not a serious gamer – in the sense that I’m not that good at it and just play for an hour each day to relax.
Sadly, my Xbox 360 developed a fault yesterday (it won’t power on and yes I’ve tried everything suggested on YouTube). So I’m left with the dilemma of whether to get a PS3 or wait to buy the PS4 or Xbox one.
The thing is, my ex bought me the Xbox when in truth I wanted a PS3, since the few friends I do have that are into gaming, are on the PS. But hey, I was grateful just to have a console bought for me ☺
Now everyone tells me that the PS4 is the way to go but I really wanted to play GTA 5 (which is not going to be released until next year) and the extra cost of the PS4 is a slight concern.
So, would it be worth getting a PS3 at this point or should I just buy the PS4 instead? I don’t want to buy a PS3 just to end upgrading it in 8 months times.
To complicate matters, I was considering the Xbox one. I mainly play FPS (COD) and some GTA & fight night champion type games. I understand that some titles are exclusive to the PS/Xbox. So in your opinion will the PS3/4 be suitable. Sorry, but I know very little about the gaming world.
I would be really grateful for people opinions (and reasons!) for the best way forwards.
Thanks people! ☺

It hasn't even been confirmed for PC although assets ripped from the 360 release do point to a possible PC version.
There are lines of code from assets you mention that point to Orbis - Orbis being the PS4 dev kit. Let's revisit your quotes a few months from now to see if you were right eh?
Anyway, OP, If I was you I would get in on a PS3 and play it's best games - you should get a great deal for that console and get games cheap online. Then make the decision to go PS4 when it's had a few months under it's belt.
The 8th generation consoles don't look to be a massive leap forward over their predecessors and until they're releases quality titles, I'd avoid.
I'd have only considered buying a PS4 at launch if it was backward-compatible with the library of PS3 games I've amassed.
its the biggest game ever so they will have it on the psn store for high price.
i would get cheap ps3 and wait a year for ps4
It'll do me for some time yet.
Loads of fantastic exclusives.
Uncharted Trilogy
The Last Of Us
Resistance Trilogy
Five x Rachet & Clank games (one is released soon)
Little Big Planet 1 & 2
All three Killzone
Gran Turismo 5
All 4 Motorstorm
22 exclusives worth playing off the top of my head
Sorry to burst your bubble but that list is far from fantastic. Last of us and the uncharted series are great, the rest are pure rubbish. The only other exclusive worth owning is god of war 3 IMO.
In YOUR opinion
Motorstorm is great fun, LBP is very good, I enjoyed R FOM and 3, 2 was OK. And Killzone series is great.
I didn't really like GOW3
My name is Bottleofbest and I approve this message.:)
Wow, really?! both resistance and killzone are the most under rated shooters on the PS3.
Killzone 3 alone had more action and story than the last three COD's put together.
Resistance 3 was the spiritual father to "the last of us" in both tone, attitude and storyline.
Not a huge fan of the little big planets but I can see their appeal and the huge fanbase.
Rachet and clank are only just below Mario in terms of platform adventures, where is Microsoft offering that even comes close?
Once again GT isnt my thing but it set the benchmark that Forza has copied ever since its release.
No offence and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I guess your mates or the exclusives have swayed you to the PS3 anyway. which is exactly what i'd do in your position.
No third party is gonna risk dropping 140 million PS3/360 owners and potential sales for the 5-10 million that might have an xbox one or PS4 in the next few months.
I really can't wait to get my hands on Batman Arkham origins and Watchdogs.
Little Big Planet is easily one of the best games this generation has provided.
The Resistance and Killzone games may not be epic best ever types, but good solid games they most certainly are.
In what way has Forza copied GT?
To the OP: From your opening post you mentioned that some people are telling you that the ps4 is the way to go, if these people are your friends than I'd suggest you follow them and get a ps4. Social gaming is the in thing and gaming with your friends enhances your fun.
But if you want to play GTAV then I'd get a cheap ps3, as you can always play a few exclusives that you've missed as well. Gta V has not been confirmed for next gen consoles, and even if it was to be released we may not see it for a long time well after DLC packs have released for current gen.
Killzone and Resistence are generic shooters at best, devoid of anything new and interesting. Ratchet is a kids game and tbh i'm not too sure what LBP is but it doesn't feel much like a game to me but rather a dev tool for those who like to create stuff. Not for me. The GT games are so mind numbingly boring and simplistic ( physics wise) that its hard to believe that people lap it up. I play 10 year old racing games on PC that are more sophisticated in every aspect. Anyway, just my opinion. I just don't like seeing what I feel is wrong advice given out by gamers who are too easily pleased. Yes, the PS3 is worth owning but only for a select few exclusives.
No, coming 2015 to Europe.
Oh dear. You can always spot someone who hasn't even played the game when they come out with rubbish like this.
