actually, S3 overnights for the first 2 eps weren't much different:

    s3e1 574,000 (2.7%)
    s3e2 464,000 (2.4%)

perhaps we're just getting used to higher numbers for these shows!

    K

    Very interesting. Cheers Kenny.
Some of our Scandi drama loving FMs couldn't take to Spiral at all when we recommended it to them. The grubby underside of Paris life didn't engage them at all. Borgen it isn't.:D:D

Thanks Kenny. No HD version at all, as you say. It's looking like the BBC haven't bought the HD rights. No mid week repeat either on BBC4.

Those figures are rather disappointing. Have you the numbers for S3 at hand. Spiral isn't as popular as the Scandi dramas but I think the last season did better than this.

Interestingly the titles say "En association avec BBC 4".

Also as someone said, there is significant corruption in the legal and government hierarchy, as well as rule-bending and lies to cover up in the police.
(Are they still Gendarmes or is that old hat now?)

There are two police forces in France, the Police Nationale who police the cities and larger towns and the Gendarmerie nationale who police rural area and towns that have a population of less than 20,0000

Yep. BBC have been co-funding Spiral from Season 2. Never seen any details about how exactly this deal works however.

There are supposed to be another 2 seasons after this one. It does fairly well overseas. Netflix show it in the US and the Ozzies seem to like it.

The French will do anything to get a taste of fine British cuisine. Although I've heard they say neigh to our beef and tomato sausages for some reason?

The French constantly rip us on our food?

Also, am I reading right that people think Scandinavian law is harsher than ours?! Borgen even referred to the UK's criminal age as the low bar in Europe (what the far-right were seeking).

Banging on about the BBC being PC and how we should replicate the attitude being highlighted in Spiral; like the Daily Mail in here.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the episodes (shame about the viewing figures, was hoping they'd get a boost from TK3/Borgen - the deserve more recognition) but it's been that long since I seen series 3 I was having trouble remembering what happened - and the intro didn't really help - which was a bit of a distraction.

The militant reminds me of Karl Urban.

    Hello all,

Glad to see Spiral back, just as grim and gory as ever. Have found each series increasingly depressing but I'll still watch it avidly. Interesting to see Laure and Bremont are still an item, as I thought the fragile bond they had would have crumbled after all that happened in the last series but I'm being girly and hoping for some happiness here (although it would grate against the feeling of the show!)

Can't wait to see Monsieur le Juge Roban back, hope it's soon!

Also impressed by the fact that there are consequences from the last series to contend with and it hasn't all disappeared in the gap as happens with so many other programmes. I wonder what slippery JP will do, or what Gilou and Tintin will do about it...

    Roll on Saturday! :)

Off the top of my head I don't recall people saying that Scandi law is harsher than ours - can you quote the relevant post please? People mentioned that the French take a different attitude to criminals though. I can only assume you don't like the French attitude to justice, and that you prefer our own? Also who was 'banging on'? I thought a couple of people made points but I didn't think they were going on and on.

Oh and yet another person talking about the Daily Mail (not that I read it but liberals' obsession with it is annoying)! So let me see: it's okay for you to mention the Daily Mail in a derogatory sense ('cause that's the trendy/right on/bien pensant view) but not for people to say the BBC is PC (which it is to a huge extent - it wouldn't cover the issues in these European shows the way they have been covered, as was mentioned before). Care to tell us how the BBC is NOT PC in your opinion because 'duncann' in post #155 set out quite clearly how it is PC? Just because you don't mind its political correctness doesn't mean that it isn't political correctness.

Sorry but you don't get to say what can and can't be discussed on here - you're a fairly new poster anyway by the looks of it. If there's anything that shouldn't be said then the mods can deal with it.

Dunno how true this is but I did read once ("I will only say this once") that there's a black market in France for British style sausages (the ingredients being illegal there I think) with the biggest customer being......the British Embassy in Paris!

Denmark has the toughest immigration law in Europe thanks mainly to the Danish people Party.

    Political parties in Borgen

While the political parties in the series are fictional, they do have "recognisable real-life equivalents":[citation needed]
    • The Moderates (De Moderate), Birgitte Nyborg's centrist or centre-left party, is similar to the Social Liberal Party (Radikale Venstre)
    • The Labour Party, Nyborg's coalition partner, is perhaps comparable to the Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet)
    • The left-wing environmentalist Green Party is perhaps comparable to the Socialist People's Party
    • The far-left Solidarity Party is similar to the Red-Green Alliance
    • The centre-right Liberal Party (Venstre) has a real-world equivalent
    • New Right is similar to the right-wing Conservative People's Party.
    • The far-right Freedom Party, like the real-life Danish People's Party, is stated by party leader Svend Åge Saltum to be a successor party to Mogens Glistrup's Progress Party
Following the 2011 parliamentary election, the Social Liberals, Socialist People's Party, and Social Democrats did form a coalition government, with parliamentary support from the Red-Green Alliance and with Helle Thorning-Schmidt becoming Denmark's first female prime minister (though, in the real-life coalition, the Social Democrats were the leading party).[6]

The age of criminal responsibility in Britain is 10 which is frowned upon by countries such as Norway. Denmark seems to be the toughest of all the Scandinavian countries law and order wise.

France is a signatory to all the same treaties as us, yet their system seems to produce very different results.

What happened in that bank was outrageous, but no one seems too bothered in Spiral, it didn't even sway the magistrate.

kept wondering what had happened to Leo ,the youngest member of the team, then realised he was from Braquo!! Definatley too long between series methinks :)

also took me a while to get back into Spiral after Borgen. seemed quite a slow burning opener but won't be missing any episodes.

what follows this? the Bridge? those who kill?

I don't see why JP is slippery just because he won't collude in the cover-up over what Laure did to the guy at the end of Spiral 3.

Either Gilou will get his new "friends" to sort out the problem or Gilou and Tintin will fit him up and set the IGS (Internal Affairs) on him.

Looking forward to revisiting the lives of Roban

Did I miss something, or is Juge Roban written out of season 4? It's so long since I watched season 3 I forget what happened to him. Odd thing is, he's on the cast list for the first three episodes on IMDB but I don't recall seeing him.

The whole 'cover up' story is a bit silly because it's so manufactured. There's no reason why they had to pretend Gilou and Tintin saw Laure fire the gun. They could have just said the perp had the gun so Laure shot him while the other two were still trying to get in, that would have been impossible to challenge.

After his brother turned out to be as bent as a 9 Euro note at the end of Spiral 3 Roban was taken off the case. This, added to the fact that the young lawyer who might have been his son topped himself could well have led to Roban taking a leave of absence.

I'm sure they haven't skipped 3. I definitely saw 3 on BBC 4 last year.

I finally manged to work out why i'd not seen series 3.

It was last shown in May 2011 but I only started watching later that year when it was repeated from the beginning.
I don't know why BBC4 skipped series 3 this time around but I have bought the DVD so crisis over:D

It won't be The Bridge 2 as it won't be shown in Denmark and Sweden until the latter part of this year and I would assume it's part of the deal that it can't be shown here until it's shown there.

Those Who Kill was shown in ITV2 last year

I think there are still a few episode of the Rolf Lassgård Wallander to be shown yet or BBC4 could show Il giovane Montalbano aka Young Montalbano

Yes you've missed a series, the one you're describing is series 2. Series 3 involves the hunt for a serial killer.

I'd either hunt around for the old threads, or, look at the Guardian tv section, they started doing week by week blogs from series 3.
