What movies from the last decade would you say have been really good and just as good as the book it was originated from?

I think 'the notebook' was a great film and book and did it justice.

What are yours? :)

I think Ringu was as good as the book as was About A Boy. I still haven't read The Virgin Suicides but would like to as I enjoyed the film.

    The Godfather

I dislike the long-winded subplots in the book about Johnny Fontane and Lucy Mancini and can see why their stories were so reduced in the film adaption. Apart from that though, it's a good read.

2001: A Space Odyssey, although book and film were made together.

I'm looking forward to Asimov's Foundation, if and when it ever happens.

Mystic River and Shutter Island were quite good.

I agree. And apart from the subplots you mention, they did a hell of a job getting nearly all of the book on the screen, IIRC (it's many, many years since I read it).

Technically not a film but Jesus of Nazareth starring Robert Powell was fantastic adaptation of parts of a book called The Bible. Apparently the book has quite a cult following. :D

I didn't think they did a terrible job with 'The Golden Compass'. There were slight things wrong with it, but it wasn't a bad effort. They'd never have manged the other two books though. The third would be unfilmable, I'm sure.

    SorryIhave to disagree.

The Bourne Books were excellent and The Bourne Movies are great, but don't make the mistake of thinking one bears any relation to the other, other than basic premise of spy having amnesia!

Watchmen seems to be a bit of a Marmite film but I think it did a really good job. I might even say I loved it.

Lord of the Rings - even though there were dramatic changes that I didn't like, the films themselves are masterpieces imho.

    Gone With The Wind

    Empire of the Sun

Sense and Sensibility (1997 Emma Thompson version)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

    Schindler's List

    To Kill a Mockingbird

    The Remains of the Day

    The Name of the Rose

    Watership Down

    Ordinary People

...to name a few. i'm sure there will be more that I can't think of for the moment. :)

Although mentioned already, have to do it again,
    Gone With The wind.

    A Room With A View

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, (recent Disney version)

Last Of The Mohicans (great film, interminably boring book that was an exercise in perserverence to finish, so that's a bit of a cheat)

Vanity Fair (Reese Witherspoon I think pulled the part off against expectations)

Staggering ammount of films here I didn't realise were made in the last decade. I must have had a flash forward the first time I saw 'em!
