Hey,

I'm collecting responses for my research project in relation to children and digital media. I'd really appreciate it if you're able to spare a few minutes answering some questions! Thanks :)

1. How old were you when you began playing game consoles? Do you feel that in hindsight this was the right age?
2. Which was the first game you played, and what was it about the game that made you want to go back to it?
3. How often would you play games growing up? And is this more or less than how often you currently play?
4. Whilst you were growing up, did your parents ever regulate your game play time or only allow certain games to be played? Or did you have free reign? If so did this ever affect your social life?
5. Do you feel that game playing (consoles apps, etc) is beneficial to children's development?
6. (If you're a parent) do you encourage your child to play apps and games? Or are there certain games you wouldn't allow?
7. Would you take a different approach than your parents did in regards to your children playing games/being online/watching television?

Thank you very much!
Carina

I've been playing on computers all my life I got a console a Nes at about age 9 this was an appropriate age.

First game I played was Daley Thompson super test on the spectrum age about 4. We had 2 games at the time the other was the never ending story which used to frighten me.

As an adult I play more as things like school and parents don't get in the way I also have my own money to spend on games.

I was allowed free reign and in the old days there weren't any age restrictions and most Ames were copies anyway.

I don't think playing games is at all beneficial but they err fun why does everything have to have some sort of educational benefit.

The only games I don't allow my children aged 6 9 and 11 to play are games with sex or sexual violence in them.

I think my parents got it right I don't see any correlation with video games TV movies and violence. Violence is learnt in the home and taught directly by violent parents and copied behaviour by real people. In fact playing competitive or violent video games I believe gives kids a chance to release aggression.

    1. Got a Spectrum 128k when i was about 8 i think. Seemed about right to me.
    2. First game i remember playing is Granny's Garden on the BBC Micro
    3. I played games very often growing up. I still play them very often now (pretty much every day)
    4. When i was younger the graphics where so basic there was little need for any regulation
    5. Absolutely. In many ways, from hand eye co-ordination to knowledge of history, etc
    6. They don't need encouragement! I wouldn't let them play/see me playing anything with excessive violence towards people, sexual content or gratutious swearing.
    7. Of course, but then the world of entertainment is a very different place now.

    1. Around age 5 (1984). Mattel's Intellivision console. I'd say it was the right age. My parents would definitely say it was as it stopped me disappearing off on my bike for hours on end and making them worry.

    2. I can't remember the name of the first game. All I can recall now is that you had to piece together a spaceship from 4 different pieces.

    3. I'd play more in my teens especially post-high school. I probably play more now than I ever did.

    4. Parents would only let me play until certain times as I got older the times would relax more and more. As to the type of game - when I was younger it wasn't so much of a problem, as Vast and LadyMac said, regulations weren't too strict back then and games weren't as gory.

    5. I'd say that playing games increases hand/eye coordination, spacial reasoning and problem solving skills. But definitely do need to be rationed as I think children need to be active.

    6. Not a parent, but if I did stumble into that minefield I would encourage them to play. But it would be after academia or sports. I always went out to play and so would they.

    7. I wouldn't do anything that much different than what my parents did if I had kids. I watched violent movies from a young age (we're talking 18 rated at about 7/8 years old) and I am quite well-adjusted, emotionally, socially.

    1. The Atari 2600 when I was about 4 and the age felt right
    2. Space Invaders
    3. I played games a couple of hours a day growing up, I play less now due to time constraints.
    4. I could play any games I wanted for how long I wanted, often I played them with mates so it helped my social life if anything.
    5. Yeah I think games help a variety of skills such as hand to eye coordination as well as improving social aspects with multiplayer.
    6. N/A
    7. Yes I would restrict higher rated movies and games such as 15s and 18s.

    1. How old were you when you began playing game consoles? Do you feel that in hindsight this was the right age?

I was seven years old, yes the right age

    2. Which was the first game you played, and what was it about the game that made you want to go back to it?

Tetris on the Gameboy. It was fun to play, could play on my own, indoors/ anywhere

    3. How often would you play games growing up? And is this more or less than how often you currently play?

Parents only allowed me to play on weekend, but i would sneak a few here and there but on weekends i would play for 4-5 hours

    4. Whilst you were growing up, did your parents ever regulate your game play time or only allow certain games to be played? Or did you have free reign? If so did this ever affect your social life?

woops already answered but yes parents tried to restrict to weekends + holidays only, they did not restrict type of game in fact they bought me 18 rated games without blinking (they knew little about computer games). I don't think it affected my social life since i played with my brother and fellow kids outside as I did on the SNES / N64

    5. Do you feel that game playing (consoles apps, etc) is beneficial to children's development?

Honestly i don't see it, I think there may be a link between people that do play computer games and intellect but not sure if playing games is a result of that.

    6. (If you're a parent) do you encourage your child to play apps and games? Or are there certain games you wouldn't allow?

N/A (however if i did have kids I would limit the type of game e.g. i wouldn't let a 7 year old play GTA but i would let them once they are like 12-13.)

    7. Would you take a different approach than your parents did in regards to your children playing games/being online/watching television?

I would apply the same weekends + holidays only rule. I would definately control online and definitely no porn.

    1. How old were you when you began playing game consoles? Do you feel that in hindsight this was the right age? 8 years old... Don't think it did me any harm.

    2. Which was the first game you played, and what was it about the game that made you want to go back to it? Combat on the Atari, it was good simple fun, and something I could play with my Dad.

    3. How often would you play games growing up? And is this more or less than how often you currently play? No set amount really, just when I felt the urge... the same as today.

    4. Whilst you were growing up, did your parents ever regulate your game play time or only allow certain games to be played? Or did you have free reign? If so did this ever affect your social life? Games playing was never allowed to interfere with school work, chores etc. - no often encouraged social integration.

    5. Do you feel that game playing (consoles apps, etc) is beneficial to children's development? It can be, in moderation, and using the right games accessories (kinect, wii, etc.) keeping them active, but having fun with the family at the same time.

    6. (If you're a parent) do you encourage your child to play apps and games? Or are there certain games you wouldn't allow? N/A

    7. Would you take a different approach than your parents did in regards to your children playing games/being online/watching television? Probably not, I would just make sure of the use of Kinect, Wii fit, etc. the more active side of gaming

    Hey,

I'm collecting responses for my research project in relation to children and digital media. I'd really appreciate it if you're able to spare a few minutes answering some questions! Thanks :)

    1. How old were you when you began playing game consoles? Do you feel that in hindsight this was the right age? 5. Yes because it was age appropriate games like Mario, Digger T Rock etc
    2. Which was the first game you played, and what was it about the game that made you want to go back to it? An old Bruce Lee game for the Atari, it was my uncles and it looked so much fun.
    3. How often would you play games growing up? And is this more or less than how often you currently play? Me and my mates would go through phases. Most of the time we were outside playing, but if it was raining or in winter when it gets cold and dark quickly, we would meet up at someones house for gaming nights.
    4. Whilst you were growing up, did your parents ever regulate your game play time or only allow certain games to be played? Or did you have free reign? If so did this ever affect your social life? Once I got a playstation 1 when I was 11, I had free reign to pick what I liked. Never effected my social life at all.
    5. Do you feel that game playing (consoles apps, etc) is beneficial to children's development? A small amount is ok, but no, gaming is not healthy for children. Its often bombastic and energetic, constantly crying for attention, which is the last thing a young mind needs. Lots of people use computer games as a cheap baby sitter, and wonder why there kids never socilise correctly.
    6. (If you're a parent) do you encourage your child to play apps and games? Or are there certain games you wouldn't allow? Not a parent
    7. Would you take a different approach than your parents did in regards to your children playing games/being online/watching television? Yes, I would restrict the internet a lot when they are young, letting bits back as they grow older and can apprciate the dangers that exist online.

    Thank you very much!
