There was a brilliant thread on soul and funk music a few months ago but it doesn't look as though you can access it now which is a pity.

I have every song on Toby Latimer's list on my mp3 player - excellent choices so they all get a thumbs up from me.

    Anyway my suggestions...

Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music
Jean Knight - Mr Big Stuff
    The Astors - Candy
Staple Singers - I'll Take You There
    Fontella Bass - Rescue Me
    Robert Parker - Barefootin'

    Randy Crawford

    Time For Love
    Rio De Janeiro Blue
    Secret Combination
    Rainy Night in Georgia

Billy Griffin - Hold Me Tighter In The Rain
    Quincy Jones - Razzamatazz
Change - Searchin' (lead vocal by Luther Vandross)
Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes - The Love I Lost
Jean Carn - Was That All It Was
The Stylistics - Betcha By Golly Wow
The Stylistics - Rockin' Roll Baby
The Moments - Look At Me (I'm in Love)
The Moments - Love On A Two Way Street
Chi Lites - Too Good To Be Forgotten

    The O' Jays

    Darlin' Darlin' Baby
    Backstabbers
    Used Ta Be My Girl
    I Love Music

    The Supremes - The Happening
Supremes - My World Is Empty Without You
Four Tops - The Same Old Song
Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Lovin'

    Temptations

    Ain't Too Proud To Beg
    Get Ready
The Way You Do The Things You Do
    Just My Imagination

Billy Paul - Bring The Family Back
Keni Burke - Rising To The Top
Rochelle - My Magic Man (recently rediscovered this one)
    Hi Tension - Hi Tension
David Joseph - You Can't Hide Your Love
Loose Ends - Hanging On A String/ Nights of Pleasure
    Sade - Paradise
Mystic Merlin - Just Can't Give You Up

Good choice with Love Meeting Love by Level 42 from CroissantLover. I'd have to recommend 'Love Games' and 'Starchild' by Level 42 as well as also flagging up 'Love Meeting Love.' Sadly you only ever hear 'Lessons in Love' or 'Running in the Family' on most radio stations and occasionally 'Leaving Me Now' but Level 42's first albums are really worth checking out.

    Freeez - Southern Freeze
George Benson - Love X Love

As for contemporary stuff, I think my favourite track in recent years has to be Angie Stone's 'Wish I Didn't Miss You.'

Specifically contemporary R&B, a minor uk hit for Teedra Moses around 2005 called 'I need to be your girl' is really worth checking out. I only heard it on Radio 1 once but that one play was enough to make me look for it.

I don't know much about the genre, but "That's What Friends are For" by Dionne Warwick is one of my favourite songs.
