I don't think you have enough time to sort it by post. Especially because it's a busy time of year for them.
If you go in person you need to book an appointment - you can't just turn up. Type into Goggle 'passport' or something along those lines, then find your nearest passport office and ring for an appointment.

Hope you get it sorted :)

Are you absolutely sure that it is not anywhere in the house? Have you used it on a night our for example, to use as ID? Could it be hidden in another handbag or something.

It'll be a dear do to get another one...

Don't you have to report it to the police if you've lost your passport?

    phone the helpline immediately 24/7

you will need to make an appointment and pay for a fast track service.

its a one week service but can still take slightly longer if any probs show up on your application.

you will have to get your application countersigned, two new photos, fee and bring 2 forms of id to passport office with you.

lost passports cannot be replaced any quicker than one week unless in cases of emergency (which must be proved)

As long as its only the 'passport help' you have lost and not the passport itself then you should be ok.

Just press F1 will come back...

or goto here to report it:
    http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/lost.asp
    or phone 0870 521 0410

You only need to report it to the police if it is stolen.
