Mystery film director and critic in 1990s

I was chatting with someone on facebook and I was mentioning the new comedy Bob Servant Independant starring Brian Cox. I know that there are two Brian Cox in the celeb world but the guy I was chatting to said that there was a guy called Brian Cox who was a small guy and in his 50s who was a critic on the BBC and a film director in the 1980s/90s. I tried to google but found no film director/critic with that name. He then told me that it maybe isn't Brian Cox but he is getting mixed up with another name. Does anyone know what guy he could be talking about?

    Alex Cox.

    If it's not him, then maybe Michael Winner? He once presented a film season on BBC. Before each film, he would give a 'critique' on the film.

    It could be Alex Cox. I'll ask him and see if that's what he is thinking of.

    I used to love Videodrome. Saw so many unusual films that way.
