Looking for some suggestions of good foreign language films of the last 4 or 5 years I could rent from Lovefilm. Any genre, any country, just looking for something good and interesting to watch and I know there's good stuff from around the world that we don't get to hear much about. Thanks :).

The "girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy" is good and so is "Headhunters"

For a bit of fun "Troll Hunters" and "Blood and Ice" I mean it has nazi zombies, it can't go wrong.

These are on Netflix, so not sure about availability on Lovefilm.

Michael Haneke's last trio - Hidden, The White Ribbon & Amour. A master at the top of his game.

Watched this last night, brilliant film. The one shot scene in the stadium is amazing.

Make sure you get the Swedish original, not the dire American remake.

I'll second Volver - Penelope Cruz has been better or looked hotter.

Also, The First Day of the Rest of Your Life (Le Premier Jour du Reste de ta Vie). I've never heard anyone else on here mention it but it's recently come out on DVD and it's fabulous. Funny, moving, thoughtful - it's a reminder of why we need the French film industry.

Wow - good call. This film is so brilliant. Really, really moving and so subtle.

Some other fabulous suggestions already on here, for me especially Pan's Labyrinth, Hidden and The Lives of Others.

The Devil's Backbone is also a good watch. I found Night of the Sunflowers pretty tense and engrossing.

If you like The Lives of Others then Goodbye Lenin is a much gentler but equally enjoyable take on life in East Berlin. Also if you like Troll Hunter maybe give Rare Exports a go.

If you want to go back pre Millennium and like quirky stuff then maybe Almodovar's All About my Mother. Another couple that I really enjoyed but they were super quirky were The Carriers Are Waiting and Ma Vie En Rose.

Also from around that time Amores Perros, Central Station and City of God are all highly rated films.

Is that the one with Kristin Scott Thomas who had come out of prison?

    Tell No One
    The Orphanage
    The Lives of Others
    Headhunters (Jo Nesbo)
    Life is Beautiful
    The Counterfeiters

Some bleak viewing in there but all very good films.

    Yes. I really rate her.

Another one I just remembered - In the Mood For Love - absolutely stunning to look at.

Run Lola Run is also worth a watch, as is In The House, only just out at the cinema mind you.

I second The Secret in Their Eyes.

    3-Iron (South Korean)
    The Baader Meinhof Complex (German)
    A Prophet (French?)
    Read My Lips (French)
    The Silence (German)
    Gomorrah (Italian)
    Hate (German)
    Flame and Citron (Danish)
    Hello, Stranger (Thai)
    Election 1 (Hong Kong)
    Election 2 (HK)
    Confessions (Japanese)
You're the Apple of My Eye (Taiwanese)
    A Bittersweet Life (South Korean)
    Moss (SK)
    The Chaser (SK)
    The Client (SK)
    13 Beloved (Thai)

I have mixed feelings about these films, but they're still worth seeing:

South Korean: Phungsan Dog (revolves around a smuggling route between SK and NK), A Dirty Carnival, Mother, The Thieves (a fun heist film), Sunny, Bedevilled, Yellow Sea, Thirst; The Good, the Bad, the Weird (a western), Masquerade, Into the Fire, Welcome to Dongmakgol, Gangster High

Japanese: Caterpillar, Outrage, Nobody Knows, Paprika (animated), Be With You, Blood and Bones (so dark and brutal). (Friends insist Smuggler is a worthy successor of Ichi the Killer, but I didn't like it. Then again, I wasn't keen on Ichi, either.)

Hong Kong: The Bullet Vanishes, The Mission, Exiled, Dream Home, The Mad Detective, The Detective (Aaron Kwok).

The Philippines: The Woman in the Septic Tank

Bah. I overdid the list again. :o But all these are worth seeing, I promise.

There are many good ones already mentioned but you might also include 'Dogtooth' (2009, Greece) and 'The Hunt' (2012, Denmark).

The Lives of Others - not just the best foreign language film I've seen over the last 10 years, but possibly one of the best films I've ever seen full stop.

It's been out on dvd in Britain for a few years now. Saw it a while back, I have the French dvd with bonus cd soundtrack, adore the music in the film. But yes, excellent film.
