I am currently with o2 and am due an upgrade. I currently have an Iphone 3gs which takes a normal 3g sim card.
I am looking to upgrade to a new phone and give that to someone as a gift. However the problem I am faced with is that the best phones out now take a micro sim. So if i upgrade to one of those they will send me a micro sim and cut of my 3g sim card.
I want to upgrade to a new phone but carry on using my 3gsim. Any ideas?

If you then upgrade to new phone which uses a micro or nano SIM, O2 will provide the new SIM and will transfer your number on to it. Your old SIM will then stop working.
He wants to keep his old phone and sim and give the new upgrade phone to someone else.
In this case the op should ask the people in the store/on the phone to not swap the sim card. If they do you can always buy a microsum adapter for 99p and use that in the 3gs
I'd still get the current phone unlocked though (if it hasn't been already), as O2 will do it for free for Pay monthly customers.
Fantastic. I had no idea about the mico sim adapter. So just to confirm with the adapter I can put the mico sim in my 3gs?
Yep.
But im sure if you ask them not to do a sim swap they should comply.
Ok, so if the don't do a sim swap then I can just carry on using my old sim?
By the way you have been more helpful than the advisors at cpw and o2 as they didn't have a clue.
Yep, if they dont do a sim swap you just carry on using your old sim as normal.
If they do a sim swap then your old sim would stop working and you would have to use the new microsim. This is where the microsim adaptor would come in handy as you'd be able to use the new smaller sim in the phone with this adaptor.
Pretty simple really. Not sure how the guys in cpw of o2 didn't get it.
Bear in mind what psionic said though, if the person you are giving the new phone to wants to use a sim other than an o2 sim they have to get the phone unlocked first. This can be done via the form posted above.
Although, have you considered keeping the new phone for yourself and giving the old one to the other person haha
No seriously the people at carphone warehouse told me there is no way I can carry on using my old sim. They were useless.
Regarding the unlocking, I am planning to give the new phone to my missus for valentines day. She is on o2 already so can just order a new sim herself with her number.
Oh awesome, what a lucky lady
Yep no need to unlock the phone then. But it can be worth it as its free for o2 contract customers during their contract term. Saves paying if you ever need to unlock the phone in the future after your contract is up.
Maybe cpw have a system that automatically issues a new sim or something? Im not quite sure tbh. But I know for a fact o2 dont have to swap sims during an upgrade. But like I said you're covered both ways tbh
Nice one. Cheers for your help.
