ED - Why does Edna always wear a hat?

Surely her head must stink of sweat? :p

Why does she always wear them? I don't watch Emmerdale but I've always wondered this

    I was gonna say Pauline and her frying pan's but i thought not!

    When the actress came in to Emmerdale she had really long blonde hair down to her waist which didn't really fit the Edna character so they put a hat on her, now it has become her trademark. Last time I saw her without a hat Edna was in hospital and still had the rally long hair but that was few years ago.

    Out of curiosity just looked at imdb, not that I thought Id find out why she always wears a hat! Never knew that shes appeared in Corrie, Eastenders, and Brookside.

    Was watching a old episode of grange hill the other day and my other half said is that her off emmerdle http://i46.tinypic.com/4v5tft.jpg

    ISTR it was mentioned at the time, that Edna wouldn't have blonde hair, so they stuck a long grey wig on her!

    Hmm, I remember that storyline and the long grey hair looked very real to me...

    I remember she had it all out like a banshee for the first few days but then tied it back for the rest of her stay in hospital. :D

    And Keeping up Appearances at the very beginning. I have the DVD.
    She was Hyacinth's sister Rose I believe then she left and another actress was cast.

    Its a thing old ladies do! My old granny always wore a hat and I don't think I ever saw her without one.

    It would still have been considered 'respectable' to always wear a hat in the 1950s I think, so it's not unbelievable that a conservative character would wear one.

    It's about respectability with Edna. Up until quite recently grown women wore their hair up, or kept it covered with a hat or scarf when outside. Even though this died out, around about World War II, women kept on wearing hats to church. A religious older woman like Edna probably thinks it's the respectable thing to do.

    Something I wondered about Alicia.

    Sometime last year, there was a scene in the pub where there were comments made about her cleavage!

    Subsquently the actress went on maternity leave, but looking back, maybe her pregnancy was making her cleavage more noticeable than normal, so something was written in!

    Must admit I hadnt noticed her cleavage till then anyway.
