Question could Adult/Social services really take an old age person into care if they are still (relatively) of sound mind and body and they didn't want to be taken away.
I didn't realise schizophrenia onset was age related so yes, it looks as if it's going down the dementia route. I thought schizophrenia mainly because of the conversations he appears to be having with someone who isn't there. My grandmother had dementia and I never saw that with her.
My friends MIL has dementia and she talks to her reflection in the mirror all the time but at least she doesn't feel lonely.
I read this thread with quite a big interest so i think its time for me to start contributing to it!
I'm actually dreading to see what stuff Stuart Blackburn is gonna come out with on that interview if its gonna be as bad as his last one i think we'll need to start making those Picket Signs!

I am dreading it to- God knows what he'll say- we should start making predictions:D
We got to see that closeness, bond and connection Zak and Lisa have, which has been sorely missing since she started to walk round with her head up her own arse some time ago. It has simply not been believable that she would automatically think booze/other woman would be Zak's problem, without even talking to him about it. The REAL Lisa would have pleaded till she was blue in the face for Zak to open up, not act how she has.
Aaron and Adam just bore me rigid.
I like the fact they involved Megan in Zak's issues. It has, for me, added another side to the character, making her a bit less 1 dimensional, something ED has failed on repeatedly lately.
Tank Turner is a great character - He can even make Sean Of The Dead seem vaguely human!
The whole Nicola/Jimmy/Vasectomy storyline is getting to the point where i'm so fed up of them both and the story, i wanna headbutt the telly, which is a shame, as it has given Alex a bit more to do (finally i'm starting to warm to him, the glorified extra) and i love Nicola Wheeler.
As for the Sandy story, Ashley still needs to be tied the road and used as a speed bump, but i thought Charlotte Bellamy and Gemma Oaten were brilliant last night. For once, Laurel's reaction was spot on, especially when she almost mentioned the M word when ranting about Rachel not liking her and Rachel's refusal to bow down, continuing to stick up for Sandy has also added another element to her character.
Plus, i ADORE Sandy!
Rachel has improved so much from that obnoxious battle axe that arrived in the village shouting at Sam- I agree that as much as I dislike this storyline- the actors have been great- I think some of Ashley's reactions are a little panto but I suspect this is how he's being directed
Also Alex clearly has potential if they gave him something to do- another actor in seach of a storyline- I like the character now

Spencers-We're going to see a new side to the Spencers-they've been a fabulous addition so far- No one's ever worn a hat like Sean and Ali's amazing, whether bullying Nikhil or pretending she can read- they've been a revalation

Yes, I can certainly see why schizophrenia might seem an appropriate diagnosis, particularly the apathy and withdrawal from others - but Zak's a little bit too old for the onset - it usually becomes apparent in late adolescence/ early twenties! Not impossible, though - and good reasoning!

She was put on medication for it and she calmed down but she was never the same person after that. My husband asked her GP if she will go on to have dementia. The reply was no but she did have dementia towards the end of her life and she had to live in a nursing home special for dementia people in North Shields.

Interesting. Since I read the response, I've done a search and it does seem to be that unless you're diagnosed with schizophrenia up to mid thirties, there's no chance of you getting it, but who knows, really? Can extreme anxiety, or a crisis cause onset?

Before turning on Sandy, did Ashley ever show signs of talking to God about his problems? Asking for guidance or comfort? I really can't remember and seeing as he's a Vicar it seems like such an obvious part of the characters breakdown that's been missed.
Edit - It may have happened now I come to think of it. Maybe around that time he attacked Sandy in the church with a Bible.
Bib: This really bugs me, Hank - I have two friends who are vicars and the support and counselling services offered by the CofE are excellent. Also, in most diocese nowadays, vicars work as part of a team and have regular meetings with other team members and their bishop - all of whom have a role in providing guidance to their ministers and would not hesitate to do so if help was required/requested. Even during the Sally Spode debacle, her poor, falsely-accused husband was sent off to a retreat in order to provide the help her lies had indicated that he needed.
I actually didn't blame Ashley during the Spode fiasco - I didn't like the 'Sally Spode' character, but the actress excelled in her role as a very convincing creative psychopath - I've nursed a couple of patients like her who were skilled enough at their deceptions to pull the wool over the eyes of experienced psychiatrists, let alone vicars.
Conversely, I blame him now - or at least I blame the scriptwriters for the storyline - but if this is to be Freddie Jones' swan-song from the series, I suppose I'd have to (grudgingly) grant that, at last, he's being allowed to display the talent which has made him such a well-respected character actor.

Oh, if we start discussing the types, causes and manifestations of dementia we could be here for several years, birdcage! Hallucinations, visual and auditory, are more common in schizophrenia, but they also occur in other mental disorders - however, most schizophrenics display cardinal signs of the disorder in late teens to mid-twenties.

In that instance the patient is detained in a secure ward in a mental hospital for assessment.
My poor mother (eventually) agreed to be admitted to a secure EMI home when it was made very plain to her that it was the lesser of two evils and that if she wouldn't agree to that, she'd have to be sectioned.
Actually, if there'd been a spare psychiatrist knocking around Emmerdale last night, there'd have been plenty of work for him/her - there's Zak for starters, that silly lad Ed who clearly doesn't know his own worth and is willing to hang around in pubs waiting for someone who clearly has no interest in him, St Aaron the Martyr - always looking to take the blame for something - St Rachel the Misunderstood who should change her name to Cassandra since nobody ever believes her - St Laurel the Outraged and St Marlon the Would-be Adulterer - Oh - all of them! Someone ought to just throw a high wall topped with glass shards around the village and rechristen it 'The Emmerdale Secure Hospital for the Criminally and Morally Insane'! :rolleyes:

Count me in on the Sandy team. I think he is wonderful, big booming voice and all. He is a kid's dream of a grandad, joining in all their activities. Hope they don't kill him off. Ashley has just been written so badly I find myself hissing at him like some panto villain in his scenes with Sandy.
My take on the Zac fiasco is the writers had this big lightbulb moment: "Hey lets do an Altzehmers s/l, about whom? Oh don't worry about that, we'll just take a random, long time regular and just mould them into the s/l. Who will it be? Who cares. anyone will do, how about Zac, you know, give him something to do."

"Ooops the natives on the DS boards are getting restless, I think we have been sussed out. Not Altzheimer's but how about a breakdown or a brain tumour, or even a kidney infection, that can sometimes make you hallucinate. It just wouldnt shock me at all if that is what they are doing behind the scene's! Its just looks to me that the writers are as just as clueless about this storyline than we are they really need to start putting into motion as to where they plan to go with this!
