there a bit of controversy last year because of this.

Interesting, so Sky just chooses not to show these games? Thats disappointing.
I also think it sounds unfair that the ECB will not allow IPL teams to train in these countries if Ireland and Scotland want to.

well they can train there, but can not show the games live.

The IPL do not want to train in Scotland or Ireland. There would be no benefit to doing so as they would never play on our pitches in an Indian domestic competition.

What they want to do is play games featuring all-star teams made up of players from across the league. This completely undermines international cricket. The BCCI are free to arrange fixtures featuring India, or India A, but an IPL XI is putting pure commercialism ahead of the game.

It would be a bit like the FA sending a Premier League XI to play Australia to promote a lucrative brand rather than the England team.

It appears I read it too quickly, thanks for the correction and yes I agree and am glad that the ECB have stood up to them.

as we are talking about cricket, why doesnt sky show the opener of the cricket season
four-day game between defending champions Warwickshire and an MCC XI, which starts in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
the ecb has just signed a new contract with bbc radio and there going to broadcast this on radio 5 sports extra

so surely some tv company could show this...

I'm guessing that Sky could have exclusive rights of county cricket and aren't interested. Firstly because they have take to cameras there and it isn't worth it and maybe because it clashes with England?

I do wish they'd show more County Championship matches but I guess the one day matches are easier to cover.

Sky do cover two County Championship Matches every domestic Cricket Season.

Given the number of International matches shown and domestic limited over games there is not much space for a full Champioship game.

I know but I wished they'd show more, about 5 per season would be good plus a few Ireland internationals.

Sky could show lots of championship cricket. Especially at the start of the season.
The season starts on April 10th and there isn't an international match for 5 weeks. And there are plenty of gaps in the schedule.

the ironic aspect of this is that Sky and ECB claim that county championship and first class cricket is the flagship event, yet only 2 matches are shown live, where as in india, a game from each round of the ranji trophy, one game from the quarter finals, semi final and final + the irani game (this season twice) + the duleep trophy games, the ironic part is that the one day competition isn't shown in television and they play less games, tends to be played at the end of the home season.

There is a plethora of reasons for this. I don't think you can doubt the priorities of the EBC and Sky (not that I would agree with what you seem to suggest, which is that they're one and the same thing) when you look at the prize money given in English domestic competition and the flagship coverage given to test match cricket. Often Sky just don't have the airtime to cover four-day matches. In addition, there is the fact that to keep the counties sweet, their need to measures which ensure that their membership packages are not undermined by the product always being available on TV.

It's a pre-season friendly, absolutely no need at all for it to be shown. I'm a Warwickshire fan, and even I'm not that bothered.

I am just highlighting the ironic aspect of the coverage and schedule.
most people seem to think india loves Limited overs cricket, yet their play less List A cricket and less List A cricket is shown live.
most people seem to think england loves first class cricket yet only 2 matches are shown live the rest list A cricket or t20.

I personally think sky should be showing 4 county games or ECB must write in the contract that the right holder has to show 4 games live.
Domestic cricket is getting covered really well by Cricinfo and BBC Radio, it would be great to see some of the future english players live in a first class competition.

I didn't know where this best fit, although I didn't want to start a new thread so I hope it's OK here. How do sports' clips rigths on TV news bulletins work? Overnight, England took one solitary wicket against New Zealand in the third test... I wake up and turn on the BBC Breakfast News and during their sports report, they decided not to show the only noteworthy piece of action (as far as England were concerned) in favour of a top edged six which didn't even depict the words that Sally Nugent was saying! Surely it wouldn't have cost them significantly more to show the wicket!?!?

Why 4? It just seems so arbitrary... as arbitrary, in fact, as the current 2 games. Sky aren't a charity... we all know that county cricket is, for them, just a summer schedule filler (maybe the only exception being T20 Finals day) which comes as a bonus with their international coverage. There is next to no value for them in showing more 4 day domestic cricket. The ECB are certainly in position to be trying to throw their weight around on this issue. We have excellent domestic and international coverage from Sky, far better than we ever got from the traditional broadcasters, and we should be happy with it.

Just to correct you, we are talking about cricket here not football, there is no link between county matches being shown on tv and individual county memberships.

4 because that seem a nice number that suit both parties, 4 would also allow county championship to have more flow, currently one game is shown in may, and the latter the title deciding game (usually)
with 4 games people that follow county cricket can watch more of the key games live.

There isn't at the moment because there has never been an overwhelming volume of cricket on television. If people could watch (for example) every Yorkshire game on Sky for their regular subscription, the county membership becomes an irrelevance, doesn't it?

There would, inevitably, come a point where it would have an adverse effect and it's probably best that the ECB don't look to explore that boundary line.

County memberships are minimal as it is, quite frankly the sort of person who takes out a county membership is not the sort of person who chooses not to because they can watch some games on TV.

Sky has shown very little county cricket. Its a shame another broadcaster can not have the rights to some of these county matches.
ITV 4 might be a good home.

Sky is "only" showing 60 county cricket matches this summer (and has shown a similar number for many years now).

    I meant county championship matches.

They show lots of one day & 20:20.

So I ask the question again . If they don't want to show them, why don't the ECB see if anyone else is interested

i pay my 220quid membership at warwickshire..
and i still go to matches if warwickshire are on tv..
but i really think that the ecb should move back the season opener to the uk, unless they find some tv company to show it, if sky dont want to
