Mastermind Celebrities - Who Are They ?

Among the contestants billed for Celebrity Mastermind starting tonight on BBC1:

Emma Barton
Zoe Lyons
Tony Marshall
James Baulch
Ore Oduba
Alex Riley
Tim Key
Andy McConnell

I obviously move in the wrong circles because I've never heard of any of them - surely somebody should be reasonably well-known to be billed as a ''celebrity'' ?

There is an American wrestler named Alex Riley, but I think this one is more likely to the the guy from Wigan (I think) who does the occasional report on The One Show, he's the only name I recognise!!

I know of Emma Barton, Zoe Lyons and James (Jamie) Baulch.

Rest of them, not a clue

The celebs are always fairly unknown on this, which is why I don't know why they roll it out as peak time Christmas entertainment year after year.

The problem being the celeb needs to be fairly intelligent to go on Mastermind, there is no show if they get everything wrong, which will put many off, plus you need to revise a specialist subject.

Tim Key is a comic. Been on tv a few times but generally a niche audience. The others I've never heard of. I think Tony Marshall was the boxer who shot Frank Warren.

I think he's the actor from Life or Mars (thanks Google!)

Well spotted. (Just googled it myself.) Turns out it was Terry Marsh who alledgedly shot Frank Warren.

Or known to you, which is what you really mean.

I agree with opening poster. They may be 'celebrities' in the loosest sense of the word (eg with their own niche audience) but they are hardly 'well known'. Not really the guests one might expect for a Christmas 'celebrity' edition of a programme.

Absolutely, but it seems I am not the only one who is unaware of most of these celebrities. By all means call it a Mastermind Christmas special but to incorporate ''celebrity'' is ridiculous.

    Celebrity - a famous person
Famous - known about by many people

OK - give some names that you would rather see.

It's like a quantum physics experiment, the act of appearing on Celebrity Mastermind confers the level of celebrity required to be considered for Celebrity Mastermind.

"So, Gemma, I suppose most people will know you from sitting in a large black chair smiling nervously while I told you what most people will know you from"

"That's right John, they'll always be coming up to me in the street reminding me of that classic moment when you told me I had sixty seconds to answer questions on being approached in the street about answering questions in sixty seconds."

"Right then, Gemma, you have sixty seconds to answer questions on people coming up to you in the street...." etc etc.

Tim Key is the only one I've heard of.

He plays Alan Partridge's sidekick in Mid Morning Matters.

I am in your circle as I don't know any of them. Suffice to say I didn't watch.

Quite so, and true for any other TV shows featuring celebrities.

I haven't been keeping up with popular culture, so most people on shows featuring celebrities are unknown to me (I have no idea who most of the people on I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here were this year when I watched it for a few minutes, I think I only recognised 3 or 4). However, I would have thought many people would recognize Jamie Baulch (assuming that's the James Baulch), an Olympic medal winner with Roger Black, unless you are someone too young to remember Roger Black.

Apparently Zoe Lyons is a comedienne
Emma Barton was in Eastenders (lol)
    Tony Marshall was in Casualty...
Oh Jamie Baulch I do recognise now from his photo (a sprinter or something)
Ore Oduba is a newsround reporter (lol)
Alex Riley is no-one (unless you count 'those jobbing presenters the BBC has dozens of')
Tim Key is another alleged comedian and 'poet'
Andy McConnell is some glass geek off the Antiques Roadshow

    So there we go.

Let the dumbed-down general knowledge questions flow!

the only one of them I know is James Baulch.......usually known as Jamie

He was a British athlete about 10-15 years ago.........pretty good, often ran in relay teams

Here he is racing a horse at Kempton race track.......

(that's quite interesting as it gives you a good idea of how fast horses run !)

Who are they!....................... No, I haven't a clue either!.....................Never heard of any of them, but that is nothing unusual!, it's like that with most of these 'celebrity' shows!........... unless of course it's one of the serial 'celebrity show' rounders....:(

Far better than Harry Potter over repeated films.
