And I love Worzel Gummidge!
bit harsh that. quite like this thread myself. all about what happened to their careers after they left. ( I've seen far far more pontless threads than this )
My fave was Tom Baker and I know he did the Book Tower, appeared in Blackadder, Medics and also obviously Little Britain. Millions of voice overs as already mentioned...
I remeber P Davison in 'at home with the braithwaites' really really good in that...
Colin Baker has been on countdown a lot - well about twice
not sure about the other classics Doctor actors
Just thought that the first post lacks some sort of comment on the situation as a whole. Does DW limit the actors careers? Do the new series actors find more work after DW than the classic ones? and is that because of the attitude towards DW in the 80s? -- that sort of thing.
Peter Davision was lucky in the respect that he was well known before Dr Who, and that he only stayed in the role for 3 years.
Tom Baker also played Wyvern in the remake of Randall and Hopkirk Deceased, my fave role of his.
Also, despite Davison being my fave Doctor, never watched him that much in other roles, which is weird!
wouldn't mind betting that Tom is the only millionaire from the classic era thou
Ahh yes., Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimor ... I forgot. Tom's stint on 'this is your life' was legendary too
He also played Sherlock Holmes in a version of The Hound of the Baskervilles (oddly enough, Caroline John also appeared in that, as Laura Lyons)
Produced by former who producer Barry Letts.....
Colin Baker has done very well for himself. Loads of theatre work (last year, he became the first actor to play Inspector Morse on stage). Bits and bobs of telly, but masses and masses of theatre.
Sylvester McCoy has done quite a lot of theatre since leaving the show, too. I don't see that he is sitting around bored, waiting for the next job offer to come in. Of course, he's got The Hobbit now, which could easily become as big in his life as DW is.
Peter Davison was always a character actor, and has continued to go from high profile role to high profile role on telly, plus a year in Legally Blonde in the West End. He and Patrick Troughton had a similar attitude, and it served them well: both kept busy in plum roles on TV.
Worzel Gummidge might have led to Jon Pertwee being pigeonholed as "eccentric" in the same way Tom Baker was. A recent article in DWM about an unmade series in the 80s suggests that work was drying up for Mr Pertwee towards the end of his life. TB and JP played loonies after DW, the other actors had/have a much more diverse range.
Bill Hartnell was in high demand after he left DW, but his failing health scuppered it. A couple of big stage roles were affected by his health, and he retired within a few years.
DW can be good for an actor's career, but can also lead to typecasting. JP and TB certainly found that, but the others have broken loose a bit and have found that stage work can give so many more opportunities.
I know that Colin Baker and McCoy have both done a lot of theatre, but PD's work was much higher profile.
I'd disagree slightly with the way Chuff has looked at Tom Baker's subsequent career - I'd argue that he was always pretty eccentric and that Who opened doors for him to play ever more oddball characters. It seems to me that after leaving the role Tom made a big effort to do something different from the 4th Doctor, but after a few rather dry years he accepted that this was what he did best, and since then he's embraced the persona of the loveable eccentric entirely. I would imagine that this public face of Tom Baker is probably something of an exaggeration (surely he's not like this all the time at home??) but, like Brian Blessed's manic shouty persona, it's what gets him work, and it's what the public love about him.
One advantage Peter had was that he was already very well-known before he became the Doctor, mainly from his part in All Creatures Great and Small. While most of the other classic era Doctors had established careers, I don't think any others had Peter's recognition factor, and that may have helped a lot once he left.
I've never been able to see Tom as Sherlock. It's never been out on video or DVD as far as I can see. Has it?
Have you ever watched a Stephen Fry documentary about swearing? See Brian's bit and hear Stephen talk about being with him away from the cameras. I think you'll find he's just as loud just add in a very big potty mouth.
Does he still mention 'The Tomorrow People' in his CV?
Was TP the first meeting of PD & Sandra Dickinson?
Wonder if Georgia (& hubby David) & PD's other kids have seen it & what they made of it?
Chris Eccleston - "nice butt":o
I don't know. If you can't find anything about a video or DVD on the internet, it probably isn't. It's probably not well-remembered enough for them to have put it out on DVD.
Saying that however he is under some heavy makeup so maybe not.
