Anyone mentioned Telefusion (another TV rental place) ?

My mum worked for them for years - remember one of the perks was to 'borrow' a colour TV for Christmas - those were the days!

    Wm Low
(- Scottish supermarket chain, taken over by Tesco.
They had this annoyingly catchy tv ad:
    down down down down
you dont have to shop around
at william low the price is always way down
    down down down down...
    everydays another day
    you could be saving money
    when you buy
    so give us a try
down down down down... (ad infinitum) )

    City Bakeries
(- or Sickery Bakery as I called it. like Greggs.)

    John Menzies
    (shops taken over by WHSmith)

    John Menzies!

    I'll add Woolworth's. RIP

    Dominics Wine Merchants
It was Peter Dominic, and they did not go out of business. The company was bought by Whitbread, with most of the PD stores going to the Thresher brand (which of course has since gone out of business).

    Kwik Save & Victor Value
Rumberlows, always remember them sponsering the League Cup.
    Dixons now Currys
John Menzies[always remember going in there as a kis, & testing the Footballs:D] now WH Smiths
Not sure if Toymaster are still around?
Virgin Megastore, later became Zavvi, shame it went bust, gave HMV a run for there money
    Littlewoods & Index

John Menzies are still around, they sold their retail division (i.e. all their stores) to WH Smith so they could concentrate on their distribution operation, which they believed would be more profitable long term. Chances are if you buy a newspaper or magazine, it was probably distributed to the shop by Menzies. They now also have an aviation arm that does passenger and cargo handling for a number of companies and airlines around the world.

I thought it was great, especially that you could choice your own toppings (although I'm sure you could do that in other places!)

    There's one in Singapore

An evocative name for a fresh food chain in Singapore and Malaysia is Cold Storage and they are still in business after 100 years of trading.

    http://www.coldstorage.com.sg/corporate/public/corporate_AboutUs.html

That name is still used as a supermarket generic among older people in those countries, as in many locales CS used to be the only shop with ice containers and displays to keep meat and veg fresh.

The aromas coming from a covered-market open to the street and therefore without air cooling are quite something!

I remember Golden Egg restaurants. I think they were a chain and were around in the 70's/80's?

I remember the one in Goodge Street very well, we used to go there every weekend in the late '60's.

Well, not really. Midland Bank as a distinct entity ceased to exist - it was swallowed up by the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation.

Anyone remember VG stores (I think they were kinda like Spar shops).

And of course there was Athena - where we used to buy all our posters back in the 80's.

Used to buy all our toys from Toy and Hobby and Zodiac.

There's still an Athena in Plymouth.

One of my most enjoyable jobs was working in the one in Oldham when it first opened (until being made redundant). Great bunch of people :)

    Hitchens; whatever happened to them?

There used to be one in Manchester City centre & I don't know if it was local or national chain, but I've not seen one in years.

What Everyone Wants seemed to have vanished by the early 2000s. The same company also owns Pound Stretcher and the now defunct Your More Store which disappeared around 2004.
