Doctor is just like the curious cat isn't he ?. Can't resist looking at and getting into things that he can't explain or are out of place. Good thing he is smart and can regenerate.
Donna Noble was the last full time companion to have a "normal" life and family. Sadly she did lose her memories but she survived and ended up married to a good man.
Amy's life changed when she was 7 and "raggedy man" literally crashed into it.Crack in her wall really messed with her didn't it. Never did say who or what caused it . "Two points in time that should never have touched". Which points were they exactly?. They both left their mark on eachother. Now we have Miss Clara Oswin. What if he doesn't like the answer when he finds out who and what she really is ?. Think something in either AOTD or Snowmen will be the key. Hope the finale in may finishes S7 with a bang setting up the 50th. :):D

Her bedroom, and the Atraxi prison. Caused by the explosion of the Tardis.

Wait...a Peplow post with not one mention of the word River in it? Surely some mistake...

    Don't jinx it.:D

Moffat has a thing for mystery girl companions. It's his thing. The next showrunner will have a different trope for their companions.

I loved Amy and Clara is definitely shaping up to be brilliant as well.

Donna Noble was the last full time companion to have a "normal" life and family.

Donna doesn't qualify as "normal" in that respect. It was written into the story that she was a nexus for events long before she even met the Doctor - her "greatness" was always going to happen and everything from the Doctor meeting Wilf a year before meeting Donna to the two of them "accidentally" meeting again - with them even parking their rides within yards of each other - was said to be inevitable.

In many ways, Donna was very similar to Rose and Amy - and so far, it looks like Clara is in the same group. They were effectively "an adventure" that was already ongoing when the Doctor met them rather than people who only witnessed or were dragged into HIS story. The only exception since 2005 has been Martha - she's the only new-series companion to have no such "galactic importance" and her being there or not would not have made a huge difference - she never saved his life or the entire universe in a way that no-one else could possibly have done - which the others all did at least once apiece.

I'll stand to be corrected on this but isn't Martha also the only 2005+ companion who hasn't been "killed" at some point? Rose was "killed" a number of times - Donna "died" physically at least once (Turn Left) and her personality was "killed" at the end - Amy was "killed" as an old woman - and both Rory and Clara/Oswin get a discount at the Co-op funeral parlour for being regular customers. I'm struggling to think of any time that Martha was actually "killed" in the show.

Yeah, Martha hasn't been killed but she did get rapidly aged for a bit in Torchwood though.

Surely the only reason Amy wasn't an 'ordinary life' companion is because she was going to be travelling with the doctor. Because if he hadn't have met Amy he wouldn't have met River but obviously he met River first. So in a sort of timey-wimey way it was fate for the doctor to have met Amy because he'd already met River, who is linked to the silence (and Amy of course), which are linked to the cracks, what are linked to Amy and her bedroom. I'm not sure I'm making sense. It's so hard to explain what I mean.

And when I say fate, I don't mean something that was meant to happen, I mean something that has to happen due to things that have already happened and things that are going to happen.

Amy was "important" before she met the Doctor - the crack was in her wall before he arrived and it was only the fact that she had lived with that crack that made it possible for her to "remember" the Doctor.

Forget that we saw the Doctor meet River in the library when working out the universe's timeline. In linear time, Amy meeting the Doctor comes before the Doctor meeting River in exactly the same way that Mt Vesuvius erupting happened before the moon landing - even though the Doctor was part of those events in the opposite order. That's why it was so important for River to avoid "spoilers" - the Doctor and Amy had to go through those two+ years BEFORE he could genuinely "meet" Melody for the first time.

Everything got interesting where River was concerned simply because there were always two time travellers involved. We're so used to seeing events from the Doctor's point of view and witnessing events out of order - as they would appear to someone living in "that universe" - that we long-since stopped finding it weird. By bringing in a second time-traveller and not showing us events from their perspective, it changed the whole perception.

In a classic description of time travel, we can imagine time as a roll of film. We have to go through it frame by frame with each frame being created on the fly but the Doctor can jump to any frame he wants - even if, to us, it hasn't been made yet. What we could never see - until River came along - is that the Doctor's "life" is also on a roll of film and he has to step through his own film one frame at a time. Where it takes a leap of the imagination is in realising that River could jump to any frame of the Doctor's "time film" just as he does with ours - and she can be doing so even whilst he is jumping through time s it appears on our "film". To make it really timey-wimey - he could then jump around the frames in River's "time film" because some of them appear on his and our "films" - but she would see those jumps as occurring in consecutive frames in his and our "films" - but she would see those jumps as consecutive events on his "film" even though he would be making random jumps on hers.

It's mind-boggling but it's part of the reason I love the concept of River Song - it shows the complexities of time-travel and reminds us of all the things we've just taken for granted after watch DW for so long. If it's hard to get your head around the interplay of two independent time travellers, try to imagine what it would be like to have a whole race of them - and you get a real idea of just how alien a Time Lord's mind must be to handle that as "normal".

So River can sometimes see the other versions but they aren't quite the same because of timey wimey and time relativity.:D

Didn't River say at one point she has the spotter's guide [to the Doctor]?

We've only seen her meet two Doctors - she should be able to recognise all of them with a complete spotter's guide, including versions we've not met yet.

Which begs the questions "Where did she get that?" and "Who compiled it?"

Didn't the Doctor give her the book that had spoilers in it? Could the Tardis have compiled it and produced the book, that way the Tardis can change it when needs be, as time goes along.

I think she was being a bit tongue-in-cheek with that - she said she 'needs' a spotter's guide, but that she has pictures of 'all' his faces. Not clear whether it's all the faces he's ever had, or just all the ones she's identified/met.
