Can you still listen to the police/ambulance & fire crews frequencies?

No, they are all Tetra (digital and encrypted).. the only thing you will get is aeroplanes, security firms and taxis, that sort of thing.

You were never supposed to listen to them in the old days of course.

But now the answer is, generally, no, as all Police and most other Emergency services have now migrated to using the secure digital TETRA AIRWAVE service.

Yes, but Raynet is the modern day equivalent of the home guard:p.

You can listen to American ones as they still use analogue, just use the remote receivers on globaltuners then Google the emergency frequencies in that area

Even some of the Taxis are using digital equipment now to find out where their next job is. VHF Radio communications are very rare with some Taxi firms.

You can still listen to the London Ambulance Service on their various coloured bases for each part of the Capital on F.M.

How can you say that, they do an excellent job and offer a good service, some of them wear fluorescent jackets.

The taxi operators in this area and probably many others have a system where they just press a button and their next job is displayed on a screen. Haven't heard them near the FM band for a while now.

There used to be some strange tones around 87.4 in summer (from the continent) until a few years ago. Apparently it was a paging system called "eurosignal".

Here is the FDNY live scanner
    http://www.thebravest.com/scan/scanfdny.html

At the top of the screen in the left side just click on live scanner and there will be a drop down with all the Fire & EMS frequencies.
We use airwave here so don't think you can listen in any more.

Those few fire/ambulance regions that haven't switched to airwave will do so soon. The only emergency services you can still listen to are things like coastguard or mountain rescue.
