I love them both and honestly find its gruelling to do this but I want some differing opinions.
Shrek (the original) definetly has the most appealing and straight forward story with Shrek being sent to rescue Princess Fiona hence falling in love with her and the rest is history whilst the second doesn't really have a good flowing story and really relies on the characters performances more than anything + it has Puss in Boots which really helps it alot.
I think Lord Farquay was also a much better villain than The Fairy Godmother (despite being voiced by the fabulous Jennifer Saunders)
Overall I think I'd go for Shrek though.

Shrek 2 had the better jokes. "It's a thong!"
I would rate them the same as eachother though, 9/10 each, both brilliant films.

Does anyone else have trouble watching the first film all the way through? I never seem to manage to do it now.
second one was good, but a bit too smooth. Wasn't convinced by the "lets be ugly" sentiment second time round either. It seemed less genuine/heartfelt and more contrived.
Also was I the only person expecting the cat to be an "enemy in our ranks" and was slightly disapointed when he wasn't? (yes? ok then!)
Finally, a more twisted storyline and John Lithgow clinched it for me!
The fairy godmother was perhaps my most favorite villain in the whole Shrek series, whilst Prince Charming was my second most favorite villain in the whole Shrek series!
Remember absolutely adoring Shrek very much, but instantly being really disappointed in No.2.
to be fair, as much as I didn't like No.2, its fantastic and a piece of art compared the 3rd and 4th one.
The 3rd one was poor, 4th one was surprisingly good
I rate them as:
1. Shrek
2. Shrek 2
3. Shrek Forever
4. Shrek The Third
