Eeeegh Mmmmmmgh Wellllllllllllllll when you think about it!

What is a work of art?

A film I can remember last seeing that made an impact was 'Pulp Fiction' simply because that at the end, I hadn't a clue what was going on (well storey line that is) so i watched it again that night.

Toy storey, Ice age are good films because they make an impact on children of all ages and we are all children trying to be adults.

A film that was on last night which I've seen before was the Magdelane sisters, not a work of art visualy but as a true storey (probably exagerated) but not to say it didn't happen, my mother had experiance as a child being cared for in a relgious establishment similar to the story line.

I've just had a thought, a lot of war films I've seen were grusome but a reflection of actual war so titles such as Platoon, Saving Private Ryan and so on could be classed as 'works of art'

Tomorrow I'll wake up and check this and think.......Did I.............

The Lion King - I remember going to see it with my daughter - the sun coming up over the African plain, the noises of the animals, the music - we felt as though we WERE in Africa - and the sadness and love in the film - just wonderful.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy - the attention to detail down to the swords and the costumes etc., the creating another world, the adventure, the battle scenes, men on horseback and in leather :o;) just wonderful again.

Titanic- the scene when the lights go out on the ship and screams which come after always haunt me after I see the film.

Lord of the Rings trilogy - stunning art work esp. by Alan Lee and John Howe. And everything in the films was hand made. :)

Gone With the Wind - stunning, and still as fresh today as when it was made in 1939

    Jungle Book - classic

    Chariots of Fire
    The Pianist
    Sense and Sensibility (1995 version)

The Life of David Gale (Only just watched it on Virgin Feb free view, brilliant film).
A MASSIVE didn't see that comming film
    Goodfellas
    Shawshank
Shindlers List (The only film that ever matched up to the book)

I would say No Country for Old men as i really enjoyed it, but the ending is just pointless.

Batman Returns. As a Batman film it's terrible.Batman's hardly in it,the Catwoman has supernatual abilities and The Penguin is some kind of monster unlike the comics. But as a comic-book fantasy it's great IMO.Visually stunning, with a great christmas setting and haunting music by Danny Elfman. It's operatic, melancholic, and tragic.

There are movies that we enjoy, some movies that are outstanding, and there are a select few that some may consider to be works of art. They may not even be as entertaining as our favorite films, but just in their sheer beauty, they earn the title.

    There are only a few that I consider to be in this category;

    The Godfather I & II.
    Schindler's List.
    The Shawshank Redemption.

These are not even necessarily my top films of all time, though they do make my top something list.

What films do you honour with the accolade?

    This list :)

    Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2
    Brokeback Mountain

It's weird. I was watching on youtube today, Steven Spielberg getting his Oscar for Schindler's and I said to myself "That film was a work of art"

La Belle et la Bete (The Beauty and the Beast)
    Wings of Desire
    3-Iron
    The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
    Nostalgia
    The Duellists
    The Night of the Hunter
    Days of Heaven
    All About Lily Chou-Chou
    Raging Bull
    Barry Lyndon
Vampyr (a toss-up between this and The Passion of Joan of Arc)
Ashes of Time (I didn't like the storytelling, but loved the rest)
    Memories of Matsuko

    *breaking own fingers to stop*

I tried not to think too much about choosing because otherwise, I would spend all day on this list. So those films came to mind first.

I toyed with adding that one as a personal fav. Its the most 'grandiose' of all the Batman films.

Wall-E - Just an amazing film
4.3.2.1. - The structure of the film is just awesome. It's not just start to end. It basically keeps going back to the start and showing different sides of the same story.
