Dermot O’Leary has revealed that there will be no deadlock situations arising on tomorrow night’s X Factor results show.
This evening the final 12 acts will perform on the live stage for the first time, hoping to win enough votes to help them avoid elimination on the Sunday night show.
Sam Bailey, Lorna Simpson, Shelley Smith, Kingsland Road, Miss Dynamix, Rough Copy, Sam Callahan, Nicholas McDonald, Luke Friend, Tamera Foster, Hannah Barret and Abi Alton are all furiously rehearsing their 80s tracks as we speak, in the knowledge that one of them will never get to perform on the series ever again.
The voting system will be a little different this year, with a ten minute flash vote taking place this evening to begin with. Voters will get the chance to pick their favourite then, and the act finishing at the bottom will be placed in Sunday’s singoff.
The voting lines will reopen after the result is revealed, with another act being chosen overnight for the bottom two.
In a brand new interview with 5 Live host Dermot O’Leary revealed that his job is being made a lot easier this year because bosses have also decided to do away with the deadlock situation.
No longer will the judges be able to procrastinate over their choice for elimination and throw the decision back to the public after an intense period of debate.
Dermot said:
“There is an interesting thing this year where we have a flash vote. We open the phonelines at the end of the show for about ten minutes and people vote. Then, whoever finishes bottom of that is guaranteed a place – I say that like it’s a good thing but it’s not! – in tomorrow night’s song off, so no matter what happens they’ll be one member of the bottom two.”
O’Leary added:
“They’ll have to sing for survival tomorrow night and there is no deadlock, which as you can imagine, I am over the moon about!
Deadlock is very much the bane of my life.”

It's still unclear whether they will have to reach a majority vote, which they have no problem with doing at any other stage of the competition, or the bottom act from Saturday will have to go, as was reported back in August.
Personally, I'll miss deadlock as it made some great, tense t.v.
Maybe they will do the opposite (Sunday loser out), solve the problem by percentages (i.e. the act with the lower proportion of votes is out-- suppose B2Saturday had 1.51% of the votes during the flash vote period while B2Sunday had 1.49% of the votes for the time period after the flash vote, Sunday is out), or have a fifth judge solve it (maybe that's what the anticlimactic promo for the app was about?).
The most nail biting exciting thing to come from a sunday night show
not necessarily, arent most youngsters out getting drunk on a saturday night?
Aren't they catering to the teen market, who will probably vote instead of doing schoolwork?
Yes but the app will allow them to cast their votes...
providing they have paid for a vote bundle, the only thing act benefiting hugely from this flash vote is the act performing last
App or real guest judge?
There isn't always deadlock and people still watch the results.
I think the flash vote will only go on til about week 8, where the act with the lowest votes automatically gets eliminated without a sing-off.
But the possibility of a deadlock and the unpredictability of who is going to go home is what keeps the last fifteen minutes of the show interesting. Now, instead of Dermot saying 'if you opt to send home X we go to deadlock' and us still not knowing the result of that, if it's true that the Flash Vote loser goes home, we will know before the judges even start voting who goes home if the vote is tied...which removes all tension and unpredictability and makes it pretty anti-climatic.
I suppose it's probably not permanent, just a ploy to get the ratings back up to where they were in 2008.
I don't really agree. The voting was still properly tense when there were just three judges, and is tense when there is no deadlock. This could be good because the judges can't back out of it now, they know what will happen regardless of who they vote for so there's no, 'Oh, I love you both so much, I've got to send it to the public!'
I love deadlock
So I for one am glad that we won't be seeing Deadlock anymore.
Same. I love the rage that it causes me to feel.
Hmmm, therefore the judges will chose their votes according to which one they wish to stay and we won't see them tied unless they agree with the public then.
A new twist from the sounds of thing's.
If the lowest vote getter goes without a sing off then whats the point in an hour of results????
