Hi. I've just bought this laptop only a few weeks ago. To begin with the optical drive played cds and dvds but suddenly after only just four weeks of minor use its not doing anything. The drive makes a whirring sound as if everything is good for a few seconds and then nothing. Any advice please or is it a trip back to John Lewis, Cheers

It might just be Autoplay is switched off...
What happened if you click on it?
Well john lewis customer care is supposed to bre very good - so you should be OK
If not, you could click remove, and then restart the computer, it will redirect the drive and maybe reinstall the drivers
The machine isn't faulty, a piece of software or malware has caused an issue. Your options are.
1. Backup up your data then restore the machine to its factory condition using the recovery discs or partition. (You did make recovery discs didn't you as prompted by the machine?)
2. Try and repair the registry, fairly easy depending on your level of skill with XP, Vista or 7 but I have no experience of 8 I'm afraid.
Try looking here for help
That's true of hardware but this is software, the OP has already confirmed it is a registry problem.
Well you could try, you couldn't make it worse.
Bear in mind as it is almost certainly software John Lewis may make a charge to do the hard drive recovery. If system recovery doesn't resolve it (very unlikely) then it will be hardware and your warranty should cover it.

Thanks very much for the advice. I backed everything up this morning and did a system refresh. I now have a working cd/DVD drive.
It plays just about anything video or audio.
