New version of the Faststone Image Viewer has been released, much better than the built in Windows photo viewer, and, imo, better than Irfanview:

I just downloaded to replace an earlier version. Having it use its own database of thumbnails is certainly much better than the way Windows keeps losing and having to regenerate image thumbnails, so on that basis alone it is brilliant.

But unfortunately I still can't get it to show tif files as anything more than blank squares...

    *edit*

After some research it seems that it can show tif files that are uncompressed, but it can't show those where the compression uses zip. However, applications that create tif files can also generally be set to use LZW compression, and Faststone can create thumbnails from those.

Unfortunately I've got a very large number of tif files using zip compression...

You could try contacting them, sure they'd be interesting in fixing this:). XNView is another alternative which does show thumbs for TIFFs compressed using ZIP.

I've dropped them a note. I also noticed that in their own conversion routines you can output a tiff file uncompressed, in LZW, and a bunch of other compression methods but not ZIP.

LZW is about 20 years old and ZIP about 10, so maybe there is another reason they don't support it.
