It has to be De Niro and Scorsese. Both brought the best out of each other in a variety of genres and characterization. Scorsese's vision and De Niro's captivating performances is a combination to which no one has equalled.

Surely a lot of people would like to see Johnny Depp / Tim Burton included?

From the list it would be Bogart/Houston, and a personal addition would be...

Klaus Kinski / Werner Herzog: Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Nosferatu, Woyzeck, Fitzcarraldo, Cobra Verde.

Clint Eastwood/Don Siegel - Coogans Bluff, The Beguiled, Two Mules for Sister Sara, Dirty Harry, Escape from Alcatraz worthy of a mention.

I guess Marty/De Niro for their best work comes out on top, pity they have both declined so much.

James Cameron / Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's not easy getting Schwarzenegger to act as if he was a robot.

It probably has to be De Niro and Scorsese. So much high quality stuff : Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, Cape Fear, etc.

Hitchcock and Cary Grant are close runners-up. Notorious, North By Northwest, Suspicion, etc.

I'd put Hitchcock and James Stewart in third place. Rear Window being their finest achievement in my opinion.

I think that the list needs to add David Lean and Alec Guinness as well. So many films : Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and even A Passage to India(even though I think that Guinness was miscast in that).

    Quick Update :

I'd also add Howard Hawks and Cary Grant for things like His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, Only Angels Have Wings and Monkey Business.

Yeah they've done quite well together! Easily the most successful one man actor/director team in film.

About to post the same thing. Also now confirmed to be in Interstellar together (well one directing the other acting).

Caine may not be the main actor in his films but he certainly brings his A game. Also tell they have a lot of respect for eachother off camera as well.
