If heaven was Nemisis at Alton Towers, Vicars would be in the Fast track queue jump line, going straight to the front as soon as they get in line.

They get paid in God's love! :D

Sixteen thousand a lot?? That's what a vicar earns which is what you asked. It's not a lot at all especially if you have a family. Remember Church Of England vicars are all graduates too. They do get some subsidies for telephone calls etc but it's very poor pay in my opinion.

I've heard they don't pay tax. I'm not 100% certain though.

    edit:
Yes, vicars and priests pay tax and NIC in the same way as all other employees. The PAYE affairs of all CofE clergy are dealt with in one office (was in Cardiff in my day), but RC priests are employed by their parishes and paid locally, similarly with Methodist ministers.

They normally live rent free but a proportion of the value of the houses thye live in is chargeable to tax - they get some tax free on the grounds that Parish business is conducted from home. Clerical wear is tax deductable in the saem way that other employees who have to wear a uniform get tax relief.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a Vicar , purely as I thought they only worked on Sundays, the disappointments you have when you learn the truth as a child.

I can't believe how little they get, especially if they have a family, although I suppose they generally get a house so that helps...although they wouldn't own a house at the end. Guess it has to be a vocation.

Actually I just noticed Candyangel that the article you posted is from 2000. Still, I doubt they've had a massive pay rise since then!

Fortunately for them they do not have to survive on the weekly collections or rely on commision for conversations.

£16K that's a lot for Father Dougal, but I can see Ted struggling.

No wonder that money was just 'resting' in his account :D

Vicars need to convert to Judaism,

Rabbis get about the same as plant breeders and junior MI5 officers, at between £20,001 and £30,000.
    Dr Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi

Pay: £100,000-£110,000 including pension rights and other benefits

Congregation: 300,000 Jews in the UK although Reform Jews would not recognise Dr Sacks as their spiritual leader

Lifestyle: Sizeable courtesy home in St John's Wood, north-west London. Regularly mixes with the great and the good of the Jewish community.

Dr Rowan Williams Archbishop of Canterbury designate.
    Pay: annual stipend of £59,050

    Congregation: 70 million Anglicans worldwide

Lifestyle: Three-bedroom flat in Lambeth Palace and a set of rooms at the Old Palace, Canterbury. Has a driver and stretch limo for official engagements

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor Archbishop of Westminster

Pay: £7,000 a year – the same as a parish priest

    Congregation: 4 million Catholics

Lifestyle: Not much money to spend but he gets a Victorian apartment, and nuns from the local convent help with cooking and other chores

Rev Nigel Collinson, Secretary of Conference of the Methodist Church

Pay: £15,044 – the same as any Methodist minister – plus a "responsibility allowance" worth £4,500

    Congregation: 330,000 Methodists in UK

Lifestyle: Gets a car, expense account and a flat in Primrose Hill, London

Rev John Waller, Moderator of General Assembly of the United Reformed Church

    Pay: Receives a minister's stipend of £17,508

    Congregation: 250,000

Lifestyle: Unlikely to be a lavish entertainer. Lives in a home owned by the URC in London and currently pays no rent

The catholic Church is worth $15 BILLION in the US Alone.

And let's not even get to the mega ministries in the US where the pastors are worth millions.

I went to the Vatican once. I was actually quite disgusted how elaborate and expensive the stuff they have in there is. But then I am biased because I'm not exactly the biggest fan of the Catholic Church. ;)

He shouldn't even have the $7,000. the man should be in prison for protecting paedophiles. perverting the course of justice. revolting character. Not only that he's deeply homopobic.
