Google Chrome Takes Ages To Load

I don't mean the program to start up initially, it does that reasonably quick. But I have it set to display Google.co.uk when I launch the program and when when it starts up it just sits there trying to load the page. It never actually loads unless I click on Stop and then click the Home icon, and the page loads instantly. I have left it sitting before to see how long it would take and it was well over 10 minutes and it still hadn't loaded the Google homepage. So why does it take so long to do it by itself? Any ideas?

Often clearing browsing data (browsing history/download history/cache) overcomes the problem.
Strangely, although this happens on the current build 20.0.11,32.57 I don't have problems with Chrome Canary 22.0.1218.0
Try Chrome Canary https://tools.google.com/dlpage/chromesxs/
as I said that doesn't give the problem (for me, anyway) you mentioned
It won't replace Chrome but be installed as another browser
I put a fresh install of Windows 7 on a friends computer and reinstalled Chrome for them and even on their computer, (which had been completely wiped and a new OS put on it and had been connected to the internet for about 30 minutes by CAT-5 cable before I installed Chrome) did the exact same thing. A home page will seemingly never load when the program is started but if you click on stop then home it loads instantly. I surely can't be the only one who is experiencing this?
My windows 7 desktop and Windows 8 RTM running under VMWare Player v5 both have no speed issues with Chrome and I automatically open 9 pinned tabs when Chrome is launched.
Try disabling any extensions and see if that makes a difference.
The 'open pages in inognito', that will check for an extension errors that are causing any problems and also 'disable predict network'
I have been using AdBlock Plus's element hiding helper and every few weeks when I load up Chrome it forgets my settings and I have to block certain items on web pages again. It also seems to forget the cookie for staying logged in to every website or forum I visit and I have to sign in again which is really annoying. This has all only started happening in the last few months. I have done a full virus scan and malware check so it's not anything to do with that. It's a shame, Chrome was working so well for me before now it's looking like a load of crap!
