Internet Explorer coming to Xbox dashboard

According to reports . . .
. . . Microsoft is now testing a “modified version of Internet Explorer 9” on the console,
which will bring full web browsing capabilities to the Xbox 360 for the first time . . .
TheVerge.com - Microsoft to bring full Internet Explorer browsing to Xbox 360 with Kinect controls.
Neowin.net - Internet Explorer coming to Xbox 360 with Kinect controls.

If this is true, it'll most likely be the only platform I'll on which use IE on anything like a regular basis ... if at all.

If this rumour turns out to be true, I bet it will be Gold only, otherwise Silver members could access sites like Facebook, YouTube ITV Player, 4oD etc for free.

Most likely will be gold only. I personally would never use it but I really do hope it is better than the pile of shite browser on the PS3.

more clutter for the 360 then. It's a damn games console NOT a PC. Leave it alone MS. All i wanna do is game on it. That's the whole point of me buying one in the first place. I don't wanna watch movies or listen to music on it. I have a laptop for that

    Choice is a wonderful thing.

I understand you may not make use of any of the apps so it feels cluttered to you. Maybe a hide option for people such as yourself would be good.

Anyway, yeah, to have the choice is good, use them if you want to and don't if you don't. It isn't just a games consol anymore, its a media hub.

Yeah I understand that all too well but most people buy them for gaming. There's far better machines out there that are capable of streaming movies and music and the like. It's the same with "Smart TV's". They're clumsy and slow (depending on BB speed right enough) but Yeah a choice to hide apps n things for those not interested would be nice. I also understand that people want an all in one media hub but PC's are the best for that kind of thing, surely

My money says there will be an advert bar somewhere on every web page you open. MS will be doing this to make more money, not to improve the console for users.

    I hate been so sceptical.

That'll be great controlling it with a joypad trying to, and missing, to click on tiny hyperlinks in some websites.

The thing that pisses me off is WE buy the console and pay for live yet we don't get a choice when it comes to new updates and the like. You either accept what MS are pushing or you don't game online and that's shit. Fair enough you don't have to install the apps and things but I for one don't wanna see ads all over the dash. I didn't pay £40 to sit and look at that kind of thing. For me XBL was the best gaming platform but they are ruining it with their constant ramming stuff down our throats.

where the f*ck is our choice. I mean is this new I.E gonna be forced on us through an update or are we gonna get the choice whether to download it or not.

You dont have a choice, its in that 50 odd page T&Cs thing you dont read when you first buy and then set up your new console, the thing you just click on 'okay' on the screen to get past all the crap and play MW3 or whatever it is you brought it for.

Good point. Are MS honestly expecting people to read through that shit. It should be made simple. We (microsoft) will push a whole load of shit onto your console that you don't want and charge you for not using it blah blah blah. If you disagree you can f*ck off but thanks for the £ for buying your now, useless console. Have a nice day :D

Which is excatly what the 360 will do when you try and access 99.9% of the internet with it.

Cool news, I expect it to be a shitload better than the poor Wii and PS3 browsers. Kinect/voice command could make it quite special, providing it's handled correctly. There's no reason a great browser cannot be made for a console.

There won't be any ads, that's being every so slightly ridiculous, but it does give free advertising to IE9 (which is a great browser anyway) to those people that have long since abandoned it in favour of the terrible Mozilla Firefox or the quite good Google Chrome.

As Premuim-Onion said, it isn't just a gaming machine anymore. It's more of a general entertainment system now.
All i wanna do is game on it. That's the whole point of me buying one in the first place.
I don't wanna watch movies or listen to music on it. I have a laptop for that
Your choice entirely. It isn't like you're forced to use any of the extra features introduced over the last few months.
If you wish to use your 360 as a pure gaming machine first and foremost, that's great. No-one's stopping you.
    Choice is a wonderful thing.
Indeed it is. Or "choice is good" as I usually say.
. . . but most people buy them for gaming. There's far better machines out there that are
capable of streaming movies and music and the like. It's the same with "Smart TV's".
They're clumsyand slow (depending on BB speed right enough) but Yeah a choice to
hide apps n things for those not interested would be nice. I also understand that people
want an all in one media hub but PC's are the best for that kind of thing, surely
Again, it's nice to have a choice. If certain consumers want a set-top media device without games, there are
plenty to choose from. If certain consumers want a gaming machine with a selection optional multimedia
features added as part of the package, they can choose an XBox360 (or a PS3 if they prefer). If certain
consumers are interested in the new wave of TV's with integrated so-called "Smart" features like online
video apps and web browsing, there's a growing number of those to choose from. True, some of these
devices can be clunky and slow, but like all new technologies, they'll improve over time.

PC's might well be the best things for all of that combined, but not everyone wants to buy a PC. Or a Mac.

I'm guessing it'll have mouse like cursor that turns into a pointing hand on hyperlinks. The fictional internet
browser on the PC's in GTA IV had this, and it could be moved around the screen with the analog stick
in a similar motion to moving an actual mouse pointer with a mouse.
The thing that pisses me off is WE buy the console and pay for live yet we don't get a
choice when it comes to new updates and the like. You either accept what MS are
pushing or you don't game online and that's shit.
Well, Sony do exactly the same thing with PS3 updates. Decline a firmware update, and online gaming is
disabled until you eventually accept and download the update. Or, have they stopped doing that now?
The folks that usually decline new system updates, most often than not, are console modders.
where the f*ck is our choice. I mean is this new I.E gonna be forced on us through
an update or are we gonna get the choice whether to download it or not.
Must you be so coarse in your posts? Unlike the Windows version of IE, which is installed whether you want it
or not, the version for the XBox360 is most likely to be an optional download from the XBL Apps Marketplace.

Were you expecting Microsoft to do a deal with Mozilla or Google and put their browsers on XBox?

On a hardware level, all the newest/recent models of the console should have little or no problem with whatever
the web wants to throws at them. That would include the later generations of the older 360s such as the Elite
and Arcade models, as well as the newer S models. The earlier generations of the 360, especially those that
were susceptible to the old RROD issues might not be so lucky ... if there's any of them still around!

On a content level, there's tons of stuff online that could make a grown man cry, let alone shudder!

Well I suppose if you can't get Google Chrome, then Google Clone is the next best thing...... ;)

Either are light years ahead of Bing.

One other thing I forgot to add to my earlier post . . .
more clutter for the 360 then. It's a damn games console NOT a PC. Leave it alone MS.
All i wanna do is game on it. That's the whole point of me buying one in the first place.

Well, I hope you hook up your laptop to your TV for that. Being hunched over a laptop to watch movies is just silly.
Same goes for listening to music, I would assume you connect your laptop to a either a decent sound system or
a hi-fi for that, since the speakers built-in on many laptops sound absolutely dreadful, even for system sounds!

That'll be me told then. No I don't HAVE to be coarse in my posts, it's my choice and choice is good. Yes I connect my laptop to my tv via hdmi and Yes I use a decent sound system.

I understand that lots of people would like a gaming system with all the extras I just think (although I will wait and see) that the browser will be rubbish like that on the PS3. Restricted in what it can do i mean. Change isn't always a good thing. Look at the amount of xbox360 owners that complained about the new dash being too cluttered. As for the browser being an optional update, I don't think it will be. It'll be a case of, download it or don't game online until you do, so no choice at all. We'll wait and see.

This could be just what the PS3 needs !!

Hopefully Sony will give the PS3 a decent browser if this rumour is fact, Sony could add something like google chrome, that would be a great step forward, faster than IE9.

^ I think Sony have much bigger problems at the moment than to give second thought to something like that.

I expect if this is true we will see this at E3 next month, from what the supposed inside source claims this is a "modified version of Internet Explorer 9 being tested on Xbox 360 consoles and will allow access to all parts of the Internet. The existing Bing Search will be expanded from media searches to actual web pages. As a bonus, the browser will work with both controller and Kinect, although it is reportedly better-fitted for Kinect with gestures and voice commands." <source>

IE used to be a terrible and outdated browser but IE9 is very competent and fast too, I hope people aren't judging it on old versions as a lot has changed. IF MS do this I'm sure they'll do it right, like I said there's no real reason why a solid browser that has a good user interface cannot be possible on console so long as it's created with care.

What ever problems Sony have I'm sure they won't let it interfere with their console and games side of the business, probably the only profitable sector they have just now.

Sony's big mistake (from a gaming POV) in my opinion is the Vita, does the world really need it?? It's before its time imo.
