A Republican in this country means (as I am aware) a person that strives to bring in an elected head of state (of which I would like). How does this compare to the American Republican, which is a political party and voters of that party.

I could Google but I feel I will get a succinct answer from the good people of DS (and it will be more interesting)

Thanks in advance:)

Republican is like the Conservatives, but more right wing, like BNP lite.

Democrats are like our Lib Dems, a bit wishy washy and can't do a lot.

I am glad I am in a country with more than 2 choices.

Democrats are what the Republican Party was like in the 1970s & 1980s - Reagan and Nixon would be Democrats these days.

Most Democrats would fit very well into the Conservative party, few modern Republicans would fit into any UK political party as they are too far right wing but aren't like the UK extreme right wing parties.

The nearest fit would be UKIP but most UKIP members would be considered socialists by American Republicans.

Are the republicans really on the same level as the BNP?

But in general? Are they as openly racist as the BNP? Genuine question, as I know little about US politics. What is the tea party thing?

From what I can gather Republicans in America are like extreme Tories/British National Party and the Democrats are like left wing Labour.

Mitt Romney sounds awful and I am genuinely sorry if he is President of US :(

British National Party. A UK political group who are known to be racist and homophobic. The leader refers to gays as AIDS monkeys and the party wishes to remove all non whites from the UK.

Democrats are (mostly) like Cameron Conservatives.

Republicans are (mostly) like extremist Thatcher Conservatives.

There is nothing even close to our Labour or Liberal Democrats in mainstream American politics.

There is nothing 'left wing' about the Democrats. They are the 'left wing' party of the USA, yes, but in terms of politics they are more to the right of the Tories. America's politics sit way more to the right of us & Europe. Even the Democrats.

    Yep Jen you are right.

And countries like Norway have "right-wing" parties similar to our Labour. All depends on the country and the context :)

Indeed. The Democrats are not left wing Labour at all. If anything they are wet Tories. Whilst the Republicans are the right wing of the Tory party drifting into the more nationalistic parties - eg UKIP and yes, regrettably the BNP.

It's hard to imagine a UK Tory coming to lead the country and openly denying evolution, espousing the veracity of the Garden of Eden and being anti-abortion. For a US Republican they're almost mandatory.

The democrats are centre right. Republicans are extreme conservatives (by our standards anyway) They are the BNP light, but with evangelicals.

The idea of liberty is apparently a big one in America. Personal liberty and responsibility is a huge deal. Tories would appear left wing and 'socialist' because they "support" (even if they just pay lip-service) the idea of the NHS and the state. The NHS is something quite repulsive because of the idea of liberty - America is a place where if you work hard enough you can achieve anything, therefore if you need help with anything, you need to work harder kind of thing.

The idea of the state helping people out goes against everything, because it implies people aren't taking responsibility for themselves.

That's as far as I understand it anyway. I may be wrong in this, though.

You just have to look at the reaction Obama care got to see it in action. It seems letting people becoming bankrupt when they get sick is preferable to even the merest hint of government. American't are brought up in the beliefs of the american dream, that everyone can strike it rich, the reason why socialism never took of is that the poor do not see themselves as oppressed, they just see themselves as out of luck millionaires, just look at the support for the Republican party in poverty stricken rural areas for instance.

Most of them aren't, but the views of many in the Republican Party can be just as bad. You wont find many members of white power organisations, those with very xenophobic views or those who hate all immigrants being Democrats for example.

The Tea Party is probably the closest to our BNP in their views, but even they don't go quite as far from what I have been able to read up on.

The BNP is only really right wing in their views on race and immigration, most of their other policies are actually quite left wing in appearance, and even the Tea Party wouldn't support those types of policies that involve more government control etc.

Generally though the Republican Party is like the UK Conservatives, just quite bit more right wing (they would never support such things as the NHS and massive government funded regeneration schemes for example, they'd consider them far too left wing).

But even the Democrats are what we in the UK would think of as right wing generally.

They're nothing like the pigging BNP!

Free markets, low taxes with a fruity bible basing twist.

Even then it's still more complicated that. You can have Conservative Dems and Liberal Republicans. Though less so since the Tea Party stuck the boot in.

BNP is about a very large, centralised Government...and racism.

Romney looks to me a little creepy to say the least. What makes things worse he is a "mormon" and they are known to have very dodgy ideals includeing large families with more than one wife or wiflet. I gather the two or even three wives thing still goes on in ohio ! Eventhough its frowned upon officially .. "very very creepy"! andf the age of wives can be of illegal age especially with the older mormons. 14 is not unusual and inter marrying too.
Then we have mr nice guy Obama who when entered the oval office has real problems with the senate because they dont believe in helping the poor.
I just hope that mormon does not win
