widescreen problems

i have a sky plus and sky digital and 2 wide screen tvs so when i watch a program which is being tramsiteed in widescreen should i expect the whole screen to be filled as at the moment when watching a widescreen program(i check by pressing i) i still see two ugly black boarders top and bottom

so on my phillips tv i have to change it to automatic so it fills the whole screen but it cuts some off and when ever i use the scan banner it automatically make the screen small and moves the screen up which gets annoying as it keeps on constanly changing

Do you only get these black bands on the screen on certain channels - such as the Sky Movie channels for example? If so, it's because since these channels all started broadcasting in widescreen they have been playing many more films in their original 2:35:1 format, which means even on a 16:9 TV, because a cinema screen is quite a bit wider than a widescreen TV set, you still get black bars at the top and bottom on a widescreen TV - although much smaller than on a 4:3 TV, of course...

are your digiboxes set up for widescreen, if not do the following:-

- Press the ‘Services’ button on the Sky remote control
- Press 4 – System Setup
- Press 1 – Picture Settings
- Ensure the Picture Format is set to ’16:9’
- Save the new settings before exiting the menu
